Digital Aura's Take:

Queep has put out some great house music in the past. My expectations were high with this release, too. Maybe, with a name like the Kandyflipperz, I was expecting the label to put out something extra sweet 'n tasty! This release for me, however, was a let down for the most part. I can't imagine any of the six tracks on this digital EP getting major play by anyone. The production of each remix was tight, and the overall sound was decent, but where this bundle begins to take a nose-dive is in the entertainment value. This seemed like a collection of "filler" tunes... and I don't mean "floor filler" tunes.

Any of these remixes could easily be played out as a "filler" track to round out a mix set or as background club music perhaps. But let's face it. I expect killer hooks and nice musical surprises when I look for tracks to fill my mp3 player. None of these would make the cut. The original mix was probably the best, insofar as interesting musical content. Marco Bruzzano & Roberto Capuano present a worthy bit of progressive house here, too. But there are no catchy vocals or addictive motifs, just the annoying one-liner that gets repeated ad nauseum throughout each mix.

It's not that there was a complete lack of creativity by the remixers. The Atom's Funk Emergency Mix was perhaps the most diverse mix of the bunch, taking a distinctly glitchy and minimal approach. However, many of the mixes—like Melchyor A's Hmida Dub Mix—tended to stick with a repetitive 8-bar loop that already had gotten stale by bar 6.

Sorry. I am perhaps being critical of the genre rather than the music I was asked to review. I will, however, rate it based on the other fabulous Queep tracks I've been given and not based on the minimalistic nature of the genre itself. In saying that, I can wrap up my review and delete these six tracks from my hard drive for something more worthy of that real estate.
