Brian’s Take:

From the album Beserka, this teaser 3-track does just that: tease you into wanting the full-length LP. The first track, "What Now", is a deliciously funky breaks tune, chocked full of energy. At the top of the list, Merka makes the sample-laden patchwork keep you guessing as a listener. Every moment is fresh. In between the vocal snippets and funky bursts of energy, the song overall manages to keep a steady groove going. Both tracks from this release have already shown success in the industry, so it is no mistake when I say both are excellent pieces of work.

The second song, "Yakumo's Ready", is equally energetic, and even more spontaneous. From mysterious beginning to booming end, this track is absolutely full of life. As a whole, the track has some what of a dark sound. Throughout the peak of the song, there are moments of straight chaos, only to later be complemented with moments of deep regression. Both tracks prove Merka's ability to add a creative, spontaneous element to the style of breaks. The downside of this somewhat off-the-wall style of writing is the lack of structure that some listeners need to enjoy music. Try these tracks out, however, they have the potential to be appreciated by breaks and house fans alike. Good mix, good atmosphere, good tunes.
