The Vitals:Label: Queep Organic Music Factor Scores:Production Quality: 7.5 Ikronix's Take:House DJs, this one's for you. The No Reason release is a nice little package for the genre, containing the original track by Hatstandy Andy and five different remixes by various artists. Different flavors of funk, to be sure, but all house to the core. Production Quality: 7.5DJs and listeners alike can rest easy on any unpleasant surprises–no weirdness is going to be blowing out your speakers. The tracks are balanced and mixed well, save for some high-frequency instruments on the Steve Edwards remix that tend to clash against the rest of the track. The Planet Control mix is the stand-out here, reaching for the most unique sound of all the tracks, operating on a more progressive sound that yields impressive results. There's even a retro angle. Everything else maintains the sort of minimalist, (generally) upbeat groove that the original track contains. Truth be told, that is also this release's greatest weakness. Most of the tracks are quite similar to one another. Even when instruments sound different, they occupy the same "space" in the mix, making some tracks seem interchangeable with each other. Not a good sign for a 6-track release, but the upside is that they all have a consistent level of quality, which is worth a lot. Programming and Arrangement: 8.0On the topic of similarities…. All of these tracks are DJ-friendly. Elements come and go in logical patterns and phrases, trading on effective–if not unexpected–breakdowns and builds. Again, many of the tracks are structured in the same way, so listening through all these tracks at once skirted close to predictability–but these songs are meant for DJ use, and on that count, all of the tracks succeed. Entertainment Quality: 6.5Genre tracks are fine, and this release unapologetically resides within the recognizable boundaries of house music. That being said, these are strictly genre tracks, and too many of the songs are too similar to each other. There are definitely highlights to this release. In particular, the original mix and the Planet Control mix will likely get the most spins by working DJs. But the others never really come out from under the original mix's shadow. While being decent tracks, you'll want to preview them and see if they add anything to your arsenal that the original doesn't already provide. |
