The Vitals:Label: Baroque Records Factor Scores:Production Quality: 8.9 Chris' Take:Borrowing from the info that we got from the label, "This is a new mix CD series from Baroque Records. The concept is like Sasha's Involver where each track in the mix is a remix done by Shiloh for the mix. In some cases, what you are hearing is a remix of a remix." When I first read that, I was very excited. Being a fan of both Shiloh and Sasha's Involver, I could not wait to listen to this project. As you might have noticed, this project consists of two CDs, one mixed and one unmixed. The following review will be on the mixed CD. "Geeked". Urban Dictionary gives it a few different descriptions. Among the few that I liked are the following: "Mind totally blown from excessive use of an upper", "being stimulated or energized; to stir up the emotions of; get fired up", and "very hyper or excited about something or someone”. This does not even begin to describe how much I love this project! Shiloh not only stepped up to the plate, but they hit a home run. The boys should be proud of this baby. It very well possibly could be the greatest mix compilation I have heard. Here's why. The tracks, while all from different artists, have been given their own "Shiloh" branding. This makes the project sound more like a live set from Shiloh rather than a mix CD. And the music has such a wide diversity of grooving basslines and pumping melodies. From one track to the next, it's either dark and gritty or light and funky. This mix has no chance for the weak to sit down and relax. It's relentless and vicious in its constant pull to the dance floor. Being bored is not allowed. I repeat. Being bored is not allowed with this mix. If I was forced to pick any tracks that really stood out and grabbed my attention, it would be a hard thing to do since the entire track selection is superb. However, I would have to choose Manuel Dela Mare's "Genesis", Phatjak's "So High", Shiloh's "Lines", James Harcourt's "Tease", R-Tem's "MSFG", and Joel Armstrong's "After Later". That's 60% of the set, and it's hard for me to leave out the remaining four tracks, which are just as spectacular. Like I said, this is possibly the greatest mix compilation I have heard. This is where it's at for dance music. I challenge anyone to top this with another current release. I doubt it could be done. Part of me wondered if my high score and affinity for this release is because of the fact that Shiloh are Christians and fellow Tastyfresh members. Then I explored the possibility of "what if these two factors were not true, would I still love it so much?" and the answer was a resounding "yes". Based on track selection and the smooth transitions alone, this is a great set and would still deserve everything said in the above review. |
