Chris' Take:

This is a remix EP with the original track from THEE-O and four remixes. This is a fun release with loads of play in the effects and overall aural soundscape. From a very bouncy bassline to tweaky melodies, this single brings fun back into dance music. It would be a great track to throw in any peak hour set, and I think will probably go down in history as one of the great tracks to be remembered for quite some time.

Production wise, none of the remixes are really lacking (with a minor exception). Each remix, while maintaining the over all classic "acid house" formula, brings its own unique flavor ranging from funky to progressive house. To give a track by track break down:

The Original Mix: What a very upbeat and funky track that dares you to not get up and dance! I especially like the old-school pads that drop in at the breakdown. They really take me back to the days when I fell in love with dance music. You really can hear THEE-O's roots in this track.

Afrodrops Remix: I like how this builds off the original bassline but in a deeper octave, coupled with a deep kick drum. It's overall a very nice track but doesn't really go anywhere. Its major flaw is that it seems to get stuck for about 4 minutes while it toys around with off-beat chord stabs and a buzzing bee sound. Eventually the bassline is taken out for a brief time and brought back in a bit later when the track pretty much repeats itself in its entirety for the second half of the song. It seems as if the remixer only had about 4 minutes of material and decided to let it start back over from the beginning.

Bitwise Remix: This remix almost takes the original to a whole new level. It sounds very much like the original, with a few minor changes. The kick is processed so that it hits deeper, and there's a nice stabbing hit sequence that I am in love with. The breakdown is my favorite part of the track. Oh yes. It certainly is!

James Grey Remix: This is the one remix that stands out as categorically different. What I mean is that it is far from an "acid house" track. It is very much progressive house. From the drum kit used, to the bassline, to the overall feel of the track. This provides for a unique twist on this concept of house music. While it is a progressive house track, you eventually do hear the sounds of a Moog or some other classic synth that is a staple in the acid house genre. This is among my favorites in this remix pack.

Randy Brusseto Tiny Temple Mix: Starting right off with some congas and a deep, sweeping bassline, Randy Brusseto brings this track to a deep house element. It's a very nice, laid-back vibe. I can imagine this track being played very late in the night or in the early hours of the morning as the sun is coming up.

If I could offer some advice to you (the average Tastyfresh reader) it would be that, if you decide to buy this release, just keep in mind that the lyrics really do keep repeating (and at times almost hypnotic droning) "acid" and "I love Acid... I love acid... I love acid.... I love acid.... music.... music". You get the point. If these lyrics are heard by someone who does not understand this music environment, you might get some bad assumptions about you and your stance on the use of the drug acid. Having said that, it's a solid release and well worth the money. It is a nice collection of sounds to provide some happy times while either dancing or just kicking back.
