Brian's Take:

Up and coming techno label Giantslayers brings us Matthew Hyatt's latest work of art, "Appearances". With energetic beats and rolling bass lines, the vibe of this piece is everything. If you dig the late '90's tech house sound (before the painfully over-used "fart" synth came in to popularity), then do not miss this release. Not only are all three songs profoundly original, but one can easily hear the passion with which they were made. These tracks came from the heart; a quality that some of the most popular techno/tech house tunes lack. The percussion is simple, but it gets the job done alongside a colorful set of highs and mids.

One trait apparent about this release is the dull, "home-made" sound a lot of the instruments and percussion have to them. Understand that by dull I don't mean boring, but rather a dim sound (as opposed to a bright or deep one). Aside from "Reflection", the final of the three pieces, the percussion on this release could've been a lot more interesting. Other than that, Hyatt keeps the slow points to a minimum. There were easily more times in the tracks when I felt like throwing my hands up than times they lost my attention. Don't miss another great EP from the Giantslayers label; you will thank yourself for checking it out.
