This song compares favorably to any progressive breakbeat release on the market and it won’t be leaving my crate for a while. The Vitals: Label: Ghost Recordings Factor Scores:
Summary:After opening with a one-minute span of chunky breakbeats and atmospheric sweeps, the Elyon remix quickly surges to life with a commanding, silky smooth bassline that drives the track for most of its nine-minute duration. Subtle synthesizers and background effects are added and withdrawn with precision as the song advances, each making a substantial contribution to the effort. The producers make full use of the wonderfully twisted vocal and even add a great breakdown to the mix. The greatness of this track, however, is achieved through synchronization and vibe, rather than just a catchy riff. Factor Score Breakdown:Production Quality: 8.2The levels are nicely mixed, the vocals and bassline are perfectly warped, the beat loops have punch without being “icy”, and the song has a rich warmth to it. As with most of the music I hear, I think this project could use a bit more of the stereo treatment, but the subtlety of the stereo application seems to be intentional, rather than an oversight. Overall this is extremely solid work. Programming & Arrangement: 9.0Shiloh shows a prowess in musical chemistry with the Elyon remix that you don’t often hear. Every piece they add is well timed, well placed, and well complimenting to the theme. There is a consistent harmony and an uplifting air in the lead elements that contrast beautifully against the songs darker, deeper background. Equally impressive, however, is the up-tempo vibe that the song maintains while clinging firmly to its deep and intelligent roots. It never gets intense, but the guys included plenty of hooks and breakdowns that keep things moving along nicely. Entertainment Quality: 8.0The simmering energy of this track perfectly suits it to be played early or late in a progressive set, and maybe even closer to peak-time for jocks who play a little deeper. Stylistically it reminds me a lot of the music Adam Freeland was playing a few years back, but quality-wise, this remix is on par with anything you might hear on a present day Global Underground release. I’m not convinced that this song will be big enough to have crossover popularity among deejays of other genres, but the noise it will make within progressive circles should be significant. It also has a lot of repeat-listen quality, so I’ll be surprised if we don’t see it included on a few mixed CDs pretty soon. Total: 8.4This is a great track all the way around. Work like this is firmly entrenching Shiloh among the front lines of the progressive movement and quickly propelling their reputation as top-level producers. Bill’s take:This song compares favorably to any progressive breakbeat release on the market and it won’t be leaving my crate for a while. |
