Since the late 1980s, DJ and worship leader Andy Hunter has gone from running the stage lights to performing under them. While still in his teens, Andy began doing technical work with bands, including Suede and The Wonderstuff. In 1992, he began using his technical skills to support the work of New Generation Music and Mission (NGM). In the mid-1990s, when NGM was searching for culturally relevant ways to disciple the youth they were winning for Christ, they looked to Andy, who used his relatively new DJing skills to lead worship. Professionally, Andy spent the final years of the 20th century involved in two music ventures. He joined up with the existing duo Hydro, which was Robbie Bronnimann (also of dba) and Ray Goudie. In 1997, while still with Hydro, Andy formed the drum-and-bass Trip duo with Martin King. In 2000, Andy started working on his solo album Exodus. Upon the album’s release in October 2002, it was met by critical acclaim, and Andy found himself quickly catapulted to prominence in the mainstream dance music scene. The first dance club single release–"Amazing"–reached #4 on UK and US dance club charts. The track "Go" was widely licensed for use on video games, TV shows, and numerous movie trailers. During the fall of 2002 and into 2003, Andy toured with Tiesto, three-time winner of DJ Magazine’s "Top 100 DJs" poll. Work on Andy’s EP Life began in 2003. That same year, Andy performed at the Sonfest in Australia and before a crowd of 10,000 at New Zealand’s Parachute Festival. He also was the first DJ to ever perform on the main stage at Holland’s Flevo Festival. In May 2005, two months after Andy led the first ever DJ-led worship to occur at France’s Radical Festival, Life was released. One of the first media reviews of the album appeared in the May/June 2005 TastyFresh zine. The Cornerstone Festival saw its first DJ playing on the main stage on July 1, 2005 when Andy closed for Skillet and tobyMac. Five days later, Life hit #6 in the iTunes top-100 electronic albums list. In April 2006, the Life track "To Life To Love" hit #26 on Billboard’s dance chart. While at the same time, Andy’s work was recognized in the Christian market when Life was chosen as the Gospel Music Association’s Instrumental Album of the Year. Despite his amazing success, Andy retains the demeanor of a humble servant, seeing his high profile and notoriety as opportunities to further shine as a light for Christ and share his faith. In his interview in the May/June issue of the TastyFresh zine, Andy stated: "I love talking about my faith with other people. It makes me feel alive." Web sites: |
