Du Nord’s Take:Whatta wonderful world! I found this gem at Tower Records hoping for a one-in-a-million shot that it would be good. Yowza! Paydirt! This is a song with soul. It’s a great trip-hop sounding number that reminds me of Moby (a little). It has very good gospel-infused lyrics and melodic piano riff that stays with you to the end. It’s all about finding God’s love in a traumatic life where you just feel like throwing it all away. I can certainly identify with that as a believer and I think you can too. The remixes are in the “House” vein and highlight the great piano melody, stellar vocal and almost Disco-sounding strings. Retro and oh-so-stylish and modern at the same time, this song has roots. My favorites are the Extended New Voyager Mix and the Shapeshifters Main Vocal Mix (ecstasy!). Also worthy of mention is the Paradise Soul Mix, which has a great feel and vibe. Don’t forget the video! The video is simple and memorable. The main character is a man who must be (like) Jesus or an angel who sees all the hardship and tries to comfort those around him. It’s in a city setting and the visuals are very effective. Bravo to The Source for a fantastic track and bravo to Candi Staton for a wonderful and soulful vocal. It’s so nice to walk into a mainstream record store and find exactly what you need. |
