The Vitals:Label: Capitol Records Score: 7.5 — GoodTelepopmusik has been around for a few years now and came to my attention with the track Breathe which I believe was featured in a major car ad campaign (Mitsubishi). I was immediately drawn to their subtle mix of futuristic music and somewhat yesteryear stylings. This latest album caught me by surprise one day as I was rummaging through the racks of my local record store. I had almost forgotten the group but instantly recognized the name and did not hesitate to purchase this rather good release. The album features the mainstays of the group (Fabrice Dumont, 2square and Antipop) as well as many guest artists, some of whom were on the first album and others who are new to the groups work. The music is very chill-out oriented and despite it’s electronic elements is reminiscent of the swing and big band era in its vocal treatment and arrangements. All in all it’s a great fusion of new and old retaining the best of both worlds. I love Angels McCluskey’s sultry vocal delivery on Don’t Look Back, Love’s Almighty and Brighton Beach. She really nails that old torch-singer magic reminiscent of Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and others. I also appreciate Mau’s rapping approach and his contribution to the variety and scope of the recording. All in all a good album but nothing that’s going to catch fire out of the audiophile circles and catch major media attention. Certainly not dance music (in the modern sense) but really nice driving, reading or relaxing music. Variety anyone? |
