It's everything else that comes along with it. You have to
MC
the thing, you have to
announce
stupid ceremonial things like cutting the cake and the stupid dances that are done and the throwing the bouquet, etc....
I hate being the guy to talk on the mic
is my basic complaint. It's not nerves or worry...I just can't be BOTHERED with that garbage. Music is fun, that other stuff is tasking, boring, and pointless. It's dumb traditions handed down over the years that every couple thinks they HAVE to do for their reception to be "special". EWWW! Just open the dance floor, play some music, drink and be merry. People at your reception only want to eat the cake and go home as soon as possible.
Chris. You would be great at it. You have a great radio voice and you already MC, annouce and use the mic. I think with
some training
you would do great and make extra money!

Pat, it's not that I would be good at it or how good my voice sounds. I know I can be stellar at it because I have done it many times. I just absolutely HATE it.

I hear ya. In reality, I don't necessarily like djing weddings but when someone hands me $1000 and says good job that sometimes overcomes my resistance.
I sometimes force myself to do them cause I need the money but overall I always get good feedback.

Well, if I was working part-time, then yeah, I might be tempted. I'm locked into a steady fairly nice paycheck for the area I am living in. If someone REALLY wants me to do a wedding, they would have to throw some serious cash my way.

If that is all I was asked to do, I'd be OK with that.
It's everything else that comes along with it. You have to MC the thing, you have to announce stupid ceremonial things like cutting the cake and the stupid dances that are done and the throwing the bouquet, etc....
I have never (and probably will never) MC'd a reception. I would hate that, too. I'll bring the mic and the sound system, but I always strongly encourage for someone close to the bride groom, preferrably someone who knows the wedding party, to be the MC. It's always worked. I've never had to do it. My check is for playing music, not MCing. And if they ask about that ahead of time, I flat out tell them they'll have to find someone for that. Then, they usually tell their coordinator to find someone and that's that. Besides, chances are they know someone who is both close to the bride & groom and known for making people laugh. Having that person MC the reception usually puts a more personal touch on it I think. And if the coordinator comes over and says there is an announcement that needs to be made, I simply hand over the mic. Problem solved.

nice, why didn't I think of that. That's another thing with the last wedding I had to do, announce the dances and events, ugh....

well this is about same thing I'm in, I want to do music and video for living, but with crappy place I live, will have to resort to computers. I would agree with Pat, you'd be a better MC than I would, i know that for a fact.

well, yeah, generally I am comfortable on a microphone. I have been in radio since 1998. The problem has to do with the "STUFF" that goes along with talking on the mic.
"OK Now it's time for the bride and groom to cut the cake. Everybody pay attention."
"OK Now it's time for the Father / Daughter dance...and guess what folks? I'm gonna be totally unpredictable and play...wait for it...."BUTTERFLY KISSES!"
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
"OK Now it's time for the blah blah blah"
ugh. No thank you.

Seriously! there are a lot of dumb and pointless things at weddings, simply because it's "tradition" to do them.
Especially true about the eating cake and going home part.

We had very little of the "dumb traditional" at our wedding, largely due to ancient religious family members who do not condone dancing.
Frankly, I do not condone ancient religious family members.

Hey thats a good idea! Subcontract an emcee to do the announcements and all you do is spin.
Thats cool!

In the UK, we usually have a sit-down meal in the afternoon, with speeches & cake etc.
(4 weedings and a funeral) The DJ isn't involved in this.
Then in the evening the DJ plays, some guys insist on announcing every song.....
I just do the minimum,
Say Hi,
Announce the bride and groom for the 1st dance
Announce the food is open (usually a buffet in the evening)
Announce the bar is closing
People want to hear tunes and have fun.
They're not that interested in mixing or hearing the DJ talk.

I have two wedding gigs this summer...you're all making me nervous! And i wasn't when i said i'd do them...after the fact.
I don't / haven't DJ'd since high school('92) and tht was before i was into dance music.
My wife does their hair and they were looking for dance Djs who played 'real' dance music and "christian/happy" dance music. My wife booked me without telling me and now i guess i'm the DJ. 0_o
So i've been picking up tools the last few weeks. 1st one's July 12th. For a friend who likes dance/industrial. But her groom to be is a total hillbilly/motocross junkie. So who knows what will show up on his side. But i told them..."what do you want for free and short notice"?
they're down for whatever, and i'd rather play country than gansta crap anyday.
But , you know what? It'll be better than sitting in the crowd trying to hide my irregular gastro intestinal vulgarities ...
A friend of mine has been doing weddings for yrs, so i'll have to get some tips from him. I know he has a sampler with all kinds of fun stuff specific for weddings. So he'll do 50% MC and 50% sample MCing. Alot of pop movies clips. He says the crowd really gets into it. So i'll have to look into it...eventually. And when ppl question how long i've been DJing, i say I'm not a real DJ, i just play one on TV.
