Seeing things, in a Harder light.

I definitely need more stability, and concentration in my life, and I feel that going back to school to get some sort of certification would help that dramatically. My business is not failing, it's that I know I can do better than cutting grass the rest of my life. Please pray that my mind will get focused more, and more guidance & wisdom to be successful in this venture.

I just want to finally get my A+ in computer repair and network support. I finally found a class starting soon here, locally! I also want to keep myself open for audio production as well.

Big ups for that decision on going back to school man. I probably would not have went back if it wasn't for coming up to take care of my mom. I just got my associates in Microsoft Server Admin and this is my last quarter in Linux Admin Associates. I am surprised and thankful that the older I get the more book smart I have become. With both degrees I have over a 3.87 gpa. I was able to test out of some of my classes with taking and passing Microsoft certs. I actually just talked to my Dean and he told me that since I got A's in both my software and hardware that he will give me both vouchers to take the A plus exam, thats like over 300 bucks! I don't know your whole background but A plus is a good start. Net + and security plus are also sought after now. Comptia certs are good for life. Best wishes on your journey!

I have some advice regarding the certifications (I currently work for Microsoft, and have a huge background in desktop support).

A+ is a good start into the industry, but it honestly won't get you farther then like $12 - $18 an hour. in reality the comptia certs really don't help you. A+ is something that you should get, basically just to prove that you aren't a complete idiot. beyond that, trying for the other comtia certs is a waste of time, especially network+. DO NOT spend time trying to get network+.

You have to make a decision on what career direction you want to go within IT support. Generally i would say that there are two distinct directions you can take, and there are certain certs that you should get depending on which path you might persue. dont waste time getting the wrong certs.

1] network administration:
Network admins work with enterprise network equipment, from Cisco, Juniper, and others. This path can involve designing and upgrading networks, or even just the routine maintenence required for enterprise networking. it also involves working with security protocols and managing network security.

want to pursue networking?
get Cisco and Juniper Certifications. do not get Net+. Net+ is a waste if you are going for cisco anyway.

2] system administration.
Systems admins basically manage and oversee a large number of desktop or server systems for a company. you fix stuff when it breaks, deploy new hardware, and deal with a great bit of software. also depending on the company, you may be working with any number of operating systems. also you work with scripting and automation for servers/desktops.

want to pursue systems administration?
get A+ first, then move on and get your MCSE. After that you could take it any number of directions with certs.

thats all.

how's it coming eric?

I'm in the same boat, even though I have a degree its mostly electronics and not much computers.  I have my A+ and was about to get my Net+ but never took the test.

So after some thinking, reading and talking with dad, probably gonna shoot for my MCSE and Server 2008 certifications.  I'm not much of a .Net, database or Desktop support person, so I figured server and security would be good choices.  I looked at the learning resources of MCSE, I'm looked at the books, probably will get them, but the training classes, I noticed they require A+ and Net+ as prerequisites?  So Net+ might not be such a bad thing maybe?

the class im in now requires me that I complete all 3. I'll come out with tools, as well as a laptop, and I'll be able to take on just about any job that technology offers for me.

Even if it's as simple as running fiber, I'll be able to do it. The projects I have now keep coming, its overwhelming at this point....that's life!  laugh

Seriously, I'm glad I chose to go back to school, now I know that I'm not completely dumb.

good choice man, get that education.
i'm in school right now through the air force, training me to be a fiber optic/cable tech, so i'm in a different boat in that they're paying me to be here, not the other way around.
keep pressing on, the last part of the class i just did sucked, my average so far is only like in the mid 80s, but i'm making it through.
keep on pressing on....
