passing the test would definately be an improvement over IE7.

i just tried to run the ACID2 test with an IE7 browser, and got hilarious results. the latest build of firefox im using still doesn't pass it either, but it least it kind of resembles a face.

yeah, the new TF has a lovely horizontal scroll bar right now that isn't supposed to be there, isn't needed and well... isn't clearly explaining WHY it's there when viewed in IE 7. There's also a bug regarding a few background images aligned to the bottom of divs as well. I'm NOT a happy camper about it.

Yeah, well, we'll see, right? If IE 8 is really going to have 3 rendering modes, I'm not convinced that'll be a really good solution. Having x number of versions hasn't helped Windows Vista at all.

It's the same old story, Microsoft is stuck because of their previous software and their commitment to backwards compatibility, whether that be websites or applications. I think they need to take a page out of the Mac book and design a completely new OS, even build it on Unix if they want, and then provide a sandbox for the running of older apps. It's not even hard today, with almost ubiquitous virtualization. That said, maybe that's what they're attempting with IE 8 Smiley

ALA has a series of articles now on targeting browsers and multiple rendering engines. It's interesting. I'm still not sure I like it. Here are the links.

It doesn't seem perfect, but it makes sense.

That's interesting stuff.

I wonder how things will look in the future for browsers that claim to be only standards based, or perhaps more realistically, are closer to standards than other browsers. I'm thinking Opera, Safari, the browsers that pass Acid2 and other tests. I mean, at present, I can't stand Safari because it renders stuff 'wrong' and Opera's a lot 'better' than it used to be, but I have problems with Gmail and Facebook occasionally.

So what happens to these guys? Do they implement legacy support, claiming "Web Standards version 2006", etc. What's to say there aren't flaws in web standards that will make even standards following sites/browsers unreadable in the future.

That's a great break down actually. I was thinking of commenting on HTML 5 in my last post, but didn't bother given that I wasn't that familiar with it other than it's young existence.

Well... it's not that young. Despite the 15 years they're talking about, we should be using in for real in about 2-3 more.

Sure it's young. They only announced it like 3 years ago.
