Yeah, there is a difference here.....
Your DJ doubles as a worship leader.
Your DJ interacts with the crowd more than we did...
If I were in the crowd and all I saw as a black figure standing on a balcony shouting scripture, I would be a bit freaked out.
As Christians we want to play the humility card and make ourselves seem not really that important when in reality we are (very) important - this goes for DJ's as well.
I am sure if you went to youtube and searched for David Crowder or Chris Tomlin (worship leaders) you will see that there are plenty of lights pointed at them during a worship service. The crowd needs to see that your worship leader/DJ/talent is passionate about what they are doing and they need to see the DJ sweat, get stressed, rejoice and throw their hands up during a massive buildup - they want to know that the DJ/worship leader is a real person
otherwise you might as well take the DJ out of the loop and replace him with an iPod
...
Your job as a club LD is to light the crowd first then the DJ, you seem to have the crowd thing figured out. I am not saying throw a pile of pars on the DJ, at least go back to having a little light on him.
I don't want to give you the impression that Fusion patrons looked upon the DJ as a superstar (like those Paul Oakenfold live shows) - our patrons wanted to see the DJ at work. We had times where Bill or another DJ would start preaching during their sets, we lit them up because kids were actually listening to what they were saying. Part of the whole club experience is seeing the DJ do stuff. Kids would see someone like Bill DJing and making cool things happen, then we would later in the evening play some chill music and serve the kids free pizza - the DJ that was playing cool music is now sitting next to me talking about life while eating a slice of cheese pizza - that is where our ministry was - hanging out with the kids and talking. If we had done things your way and made the DJ a (humble) black silhouette shouting scripture, they would not be able to know that the same guy that was playing cool music was sitting next to them eating pizza at midnight.
I am not trying to downplay what you guys are doing up there - in fact I am jealous that we have at least 3 DJ's here in town and the resources to put together a great show and we have nothing going on.

yeah we don't put me in pitch black, we have par cans but we don't make me the focus of the night... kinda a dead center between pitch black & superstar
because on top of recognizing me when hanging out with everyone afterwards, I can show them how to worship by dancing on stage, and getting into the groove on stage...

that's some good advice there, james.
Yeah, I can understand the superstar mentality, but same token, I've been on both sides, as a lighting guy and DJ, and as a DJ I definitely don't want to be in the dark. Gotten have some light to see what I'm doing.
Usually when I play, I have my scanners on a light stand behind me to scan the crowd and they're just straight up, like james said, they have good coverage. They're sound activated, but the Mini Mac's run off a laptop program.

Welp, due to unforeseen issues, we aren't going to make it out to Club Worship this month. But we're planning to come out in February or March. The youth pastor is still really supportive. He's putting the following article in this week's youth newsletter:
Quote
“Experience it! This generation uniting for one purpose, to praise and worship Jesus Christ. We spin the most kickin' worship tunes in all sorts of club genres with an over the top sound and lighting rig. It's a worship experience like no other…”
That’s the description of ‘Club Worship’, a regular monthly happening in the Reading, PA area. ‘Club Worship’ is essentially D.J. worship, a different kind of experience from listening to a worship band.
We’re thinking about taking a trek in either February or March to see what it’s all about. John Baker has all the info, but there’s also a website:
www.clubworship.org
.
This will be limited to 9th-12th grades. As we get more details, we’ll let you know.
In the meantime, take a look at it and let me know what you’re thinking.
I suggested that he change "D.J. worship" to "DJ-led worship" (
), but I was really happy to know that he wrote that article.

This Friday, we'll be there! (We being me, our youth pastor, another youth leader and his son, with the possibility of two more folks.)
You gonna be there, Kairsie? Does Mr. Stoltzfus still attend? If he does, I'd like to see about getting him together with our youth pastor for a chat.

I'll probably be there, but I'm no longer on staff because I refused to sign the new contract. But 20 bucks says I'll somehow play with the lights anyways.
Jeff will be there. He's just a regular DJ now.

It'll be good to see you both. Oh, and I forgot to practice the disco cat dance, so you'll have to live without having seen that.

I lied. Jeff's hiatus doesn't end till march. So he will not be there
And I forgot since I am not on staff anymore that means I need to buy a ticket. I don't have $5 (seriously) so....don't think I will be there either
