Anyone use Serato Scratch live or Final Scratch.  Give the good the bad and ugly.  Thanks Tom.

I used the 1.0 version of FinalScratch for a while, and I now use Serato Scratch Live. I've had reasonably good expeiences with both, although the first version of the FinalScratch hardware introduced glitches into the audio, which is a large part of what drove me to switch. Some of the things I especially like about Serato are that the hardware is made by Rane, who in my experience always make solid gear, and they've added a couple of major features (CDJ-style looping using the record like a big jog wheel; and high-quality pitch lock) as free software updates since I bought it several years ago. If you're thinking about going the FinalScratch route, you might want to look at Traktor Scratch, since Native Instruments was writing the software for FinalScratch and has since split off from Stanton to release their own product.

As much as I like the idea, I may just invest in some Deno dns I think the 2300 were cool.  But if we get a new laptop someday maybe Traktor.  I like NI.

If you want cd players, go with Pioneer, heard good and bad about Denon.

Then there's software, either Live with some midi controllers or vinyl control systems.  Final Scratch is pretty much dead, unless someone releases a pretty good program that works with their FS Open hardware.  If you have an old laptop, FS works fine, it will be cheap, but no updates.

SSL looks great, I'm not too thrilled with vertical displays though, but has some nice features and Rane makes solid hardware.  Just hope Rane stays with Serato though.  Can someone confirm that you can make the displays horizontal? I saw it on a video I think?

Traktor, is what I'll upgrade to once I'm able to, unless something sways me to SSL.  Traktor has good interface, nice hardware and has cool things to it.

i have serato... i only use it because of the lack of record stores around here... it works... but i HATE mp3's simply because the sound quality is so meh... im an audiophile, and personally... if music came out in .flac and i and the space to store that large of files id run those only after vinyl :-) im a traditionalist ftw

I know what your saying about the audio qualty.  You gain portably and loose sound in the compression.  I played with the high end denon 2300's and those are tight.  The 100 dollar ones are crap.  So mabye some Pioners, they would be cheaper.  I may be looking for anthor Korg esmk2 before I think about my dj stuff.

Yo Shelby....Do what i do,  and use .wav files...And seriously though...Can you honestly tell a difference between 320kbs mp3 and vinyl?  Aside for the hissing and popping?  if you want the "warmth" of vinyl in an mp3,  just crank the midrange up a bit.  you'll get the same effect.

Denon CD players...EXCELLENT gear!  I've never had any problems with Denon CD players.  Gotta say though...Question ANY CD player that's $100.  seriously folks,  think about it!

Serato/FinalScratch/TraktorScratch,  however....I still can't stand 'em.  In my view,  they're for people that can't get over vinyl,  which is something I got over two years ago.  And nobody bring up the "DJ performance/showmanship" angle either,  cause that's a load of crap.  Cueing a record IS NOT showmanship....It's cueing a record....

Doesn't the Traktor software work with Final Scratch Open?

A friend of mine has been using SSL for a while now and swears by it. He's a resident DJ for a hip hop club in CT and does countless events. He uses technics 1200's and a decent laptop.  He was a vinyl junkie. He's got a set of older technics set aside for me "when i get my SSL". Ah, someday.  Cause i'm an MP3 junkie. I dont play gigs, just garage messin with whatever i have laying around.

But yea, he loves it and has been DJing since '94.

That's right kids don't bring up performance or showmanship, or the ableton stalinst group  will show up at your house and steal your turntables.   laugh

We would never steal your turntables. That's not Stalin's way. Remember, we're still debating the actual number of people he KILLED. Smiley Some say 20 mil. Some say 100 mil. I say... can the turntablists really take that risk?
