I am probably going the route of 1200's & Serato or Pioneer decks and Serato....
What would you suggest as far as a decent laptop to run serato and have enough storage for mp3's??

The minimum operating system requirements are either a 800 MHz Mac G4 with OSX 10.3, or a 1 GHz PC running Windows XP with Service Pack 2, either with 512M of ram or more. Intel Macs must use Scratch LIVE version 1.5 or higher
The downloadable 1.7.2 version of Scratch LIVE includes support for the Microsoft Vista operating system. Note that we recommend Windows XP over Vista, most notably for performance reasons. You will be able to run XP at a lower USB buffer setting, meaning lower latency and better performance using XP than is achievable with Vista.
so I would suggest, laptop with WinXP, they're recent version supports Vista, but for any audio apps, get XP. Processor, 2GHz or more single or dual. Ram no less than 1gb or more. Harddrive, 100GB or more.
Since dual core is more abundant in laptops, go ahead and get it for room to expand. Don't get laptops with Intel Celeron or AMD Sempron, they're low-end chips for desktop stuff. Bigger harddrive will also allow for expansion.
I currently run an HP with winXP, 1.5Ghz AMD athlon with 1gb of ram and 100gb HDD. runs FS by itself but if I wanted to run Live or Pro Tools at the same time, no go.
I'm switching to intel MacBook Pro once I can afford it and probably gonna switch to Traktor Scratch.

2,000?
3,000?
Do I buy an external hard drive?

I'd like to get Traktor Scratch but at the moment the "entry fee" for me is quite pricey...
$670 for Traktor Scratch
$300-$600 for 2x Technic 1200s (if lucky on ebay)
another $300-$600 for a Pioneer DJM-400 or DJM-600 mixer...
at least $1300 to go to traktor scratch...

Actually, go the CD route. More clubs are setting that up and dumping the TT's. Since these systems have time encoded CDs as well, you'll be doing yourself a favor in the long run.

Oh yeah... figure 2MB/minute/track on hard drive space. So... how many tracks do you want instant access to?
6 min average track length x 2MB x 500 tracks = 6,000 MB

Just remember, macbooks come with only 2 usb ports though. If one is used for an audio card and you are powering the card via the laptop, it must be used on the side where the power plug is. The port on the other side will not provide as much or as "stable" power. Also, if you use a usb hub on the other port, power as many of those devices as you can on their own. You don't want to have a midi controller DIE on you like I did during a live show.
Sure... that doesn't effect a scratch system since you only need the audio card, but it is still a REAL and recognized problem with the macbooks.
Personally, I'd look more toward HP or Gateway. Their laptops are offering roughly the same CPU power for a lot less than a Dell or a Macbook AND in many cases have more USB ports than the macbooks and other laptop manufactures.

well... when you power a mouse, a trigger finger and that novation remote zero sl all off the same port, there's not enough juice. So... the novation locked up. Did the same set later with it powered off batteries and it was just fine.
Power is an issue. It's something I had a nice long chat with stryke about too and he told me about the usb/power on the macbooks.

man you aiming high. Look at Stanton turntables or Pioneer Cd players first. Mixer, try to keep basic til you pay off the tables and Scratch. You know if you own Traktor Studio, you qualify for the crossgrade? Or when you get your mixer, get one of the certified mixers they list and get a price break.
I'm still debating Traktor atm, I have room on my GC card to get the crossgrade and save some money, but I also was gonna pay it off and get a Macbook Pro with it. Does anyone think there will be a price drop in Traktor Scratch by next spring? or get it on ebay as cheap as the crossgrade is now?
