so yeah.... most beats at cstone this year were synched out before they even went live. Beatmatching was a slim portion of the beats spun this year. Is this a lost art and is it disappearing (of course it is). I guess I mean will it disappear all together. Would love some strong discussion and opinions

maybe, maybe not. i'm curious how long it will take clubs to completely switch over to allowing just anyone in with their own rig to play.

A point to Mr. Armstrong with that. I have a feeling that clubs won't have much of a choice in the future if people keep bringing in things like final scratch though. The times are changing again.

One thing you'll see is more clubs having computers already installed in DJ booths with Final Scratch/Serato on them. Ableton will never be integrated to the degree of Final Scratch/Serato, but it's use will only increase.

as long as they give "dj's" a line in, they're set. No gear to remove or anything.

vinyl yes, but not cds. So as long as cds are around, so will beatmatching. but... if there aren't any TT's then scratch software will be nearly useless. I don't think TT's will be gone for that very reason.

If you hear what some of the major players in the DJ scene say though, quite a few still swear by vinyl, still prefer the feel to CD-J's, and even still cut dubplates. As crazy as it may sound, not everyone is gonna move to Software based setups even as they become more convenient and powerful to use. There will always be vinyl and turntables, and many well established DJs who swear by them. So I don't think they will be disappearing anytime soon.

Was a real eye opener seeing all the differnect set ups at cornerstone. Really does put things in persepctive. To be honest im still beat matching even when using ableton. I dont always hav tiome to prepare all my trakc s before i play i just about have tiome to import them in. So i tend use the slider as i bring in the next track. I would prefer to warp everything!
Does it matter if the art form goes out? Theres a slight argument that it does matter. But im getting more and more excited about the future of djing and edm. A question i have about digtial compared to decks is wether digtal djing is as animated.

I love vinyl, but I'm not sure that even if you prefer the "feel" of vinyl that there's really a need for dubplates any more, considering how quickly they wear out and how expensive they are, seeing how Serato captures the "feel" of playing vinyl pretty spot on.

I'm seeing more and more of them abandon vinyl like flies. It's dead. Most of the newer labels won't even produce it now.
Regardless, we're talking beatmatching here not cd/vinyl/mp3. Those who can beatmatch will ALWAYS be better djs, but the art is dieing off just like traditional typesetting, traditional photography and cooper smithing.

I used to be a diehard vinyl advocate, but i find that the preceived "control" of vinyl is nothing compared to the actual control you have with ableton live.
example: You're playing to a small crowd of 25 or so, you drop an AC Slater remix of boulevard of broken dreams that you KNOW is just gona slay them. Breakdown kicks in and dude from greenday starts singing, and you hear above the much-too-loud monitors the faint sounds of boos, look up and everyone in the room, even your wife, hates it. crappiest track of the night. To make matters even worse, the breakdown is almost 2.5 min. long. So what do you do? Vinyl you can either sit through 2 min of gut-wrenching hell, as you see people start to head over to the chairs...or you can rip the fader over to some track you've barely had time to cue up, and sound like a total dork-wad in the process. With ableton, you skip half the breakdown at a point that makes musical sense, mix out with some shooting star, get the crowd back on my side, and everyone still loves the dj.
Vinyl may look cool, but you can do soo much more with ableton or other software products. And a lit up apple sitting on stage doesn't look too shabby either.

Most FS DJs use vinyl (in my experience) by choice. Vinyl FS setups allow people to spin both vinyl records and MP3's. The club standard is two Techs and two CDJ (Pioneer brand) with a four-channel mixer.
Beatmatching isn't going anywhere. Technology isn't going to be able to automatch
every genre, perfectly, every time
for a long, long time.
