You can drift tempos in Ableton,  but it's a real pain in the Equus asinus

Yeah, I know you can; my point was just that you can't do it quickly enough to catch it on the fly, and if you don't mark the track correctly, you can't correct for it while it's playing if other things are running in Ableton, although I think it might be possible to do something like that if you have some controller mapped to the master tempo while something else is going.

You can correct mis-marked tracks while abletons playing, but it's a Bad idea.

actually, all you would need to fix that (and I'm sure this will be in some future version of ableton) is a true pitch bending tool that can effect just one channel/track.

The other trick is... don't set too many warp markers. If it's a well mastered 4 on the floor beat, then you should only need a starting warp marker and you can adjust live from there.

BTW, I was checking out my Ableton Power book last night. It actually taught warping as beat matching and explained why it is.

Yeah, but a few of mine are vinyl rips, and my turntables are far less reliable than techs.

Even Techs don't keep perfectly consistent speed (although it takes a while for it to drift); I was using vinyl rips in GDAM before I finally bought my second 1210. And of course if you want to try mixing in or sampling any old disco (or probably anything else of that vintage) you're not going to get anywhere close to a consistent tempo; I'm sure it was a great boon the art of DJ'ing (or at least mixing) when people started using sequencers for recording. I don't want to pay for it again, especally when the originals cost between $8 and $12

Not mention that with backcatalog releases you never know for sure if it's from a digital master so you could potentially end up with some drift anyway.

eh... if it's ONE mix of ONE track that you really want and it's $1.49 or less, I'd buy it again. Seriously.

well, beatport doesn't have most of the stuff; so i have to get it from track it down or something, and they're about $2 a pop or so.

Sure... it's ableton free b/c like MOST mix CD's they're done in protools.

Doug, who was it we were talking about recently who got busted for just hitting play on a CD and pretended to mix vinyl?

Two people drift in a lifeboat. One says, "I see an island. Our best chance is to go ashore, build a shelter, and await rescue." The others says, "No, we must go farther out to sea and hope to find the shipping lanes." Unable to agree, the two fight, the lifeboat capsizes, and they drown.
