Tastyfresh: Episode 5 Matt Risher and Joel Armstrong

Yup... Fifth time's the charm. This time we're back with two massive sets. The first is by former RadioU Electric Circus DJ Matt Risher and the second by Joel Armstrong of Ruhnsong Recordings. Both have been long time members and supporters of Tastyfresh.com and we're honored to have them on the show. Since we have your attention, we'll also plug the Cornerstone Music Festival again and I'll slip in yet another new remix that I've done: Cristian Paduraru's Born Again on Next Dimension Music.
Air Date:
May 2007
Guest Bios:
Hour 1: DJ Matt Risher (
http://www.myspace.com/matthewrisher
)
Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Matthew Risher has always had music in his blood. It started with banging on canned goods in the grocery store and 'playing DJ' with his fisher price record player at a young age. During college, he was a part of a few bands, playing drums/percussion, keyboards and singing, most notably in the swing group "Big Al's Swing Kids". He also put a WGI bronze medal under his belt, as part of the 1998 Capital Regiment indoor drum corps.
After visiting Europe in 2000, he quickly became addicted to the sounds of electronic dance music, and began venturing into the realm of mixing records and producing tracks. His first single, titled "Can You Feel It?" under the nickname of apoq.79, hit the market in 2002. His ability to use sequencing software was natural, having messed around with mod software in the mid nineties.
Around that time, he also emerged into the DJ world by re-inventing RadioU's Electric Circus, turning the normal radio show into a two-hour live mix program that aired nationally and on the web. While holding a residency there under the name "DJ Rish", he saw success with two other releases: as the vocalist and lyric penman for Pacific Mile's "Devotion", and remixer for Prophetica's "Never Gonna".
He has also developed quite a name for himself as a mix DJ. Among many performances, hes performed at Cornerstone Festival in 2004, and further headlining their Dance Club venue in 2005. He also spun at the first ever Clover Festival in 2006, and performed a world-famous tag-team mix with Andy Hunter live on the Electric Circus. Soon, however, Matthew's call would bring he and his family to Cincinnati Ohio. Electric Circus would soon be disbanded after his departure. In Cincinnati, he went under the radar for some time, while adjusting to the new call on his life.
Hes recently re-emerged into the DJ world with "Circumlocution", a mix-set featuring the music of Cristian Paduraru. 2007 is threatening to be a smashing year for Matthew, with rumors of collaborative productions and more mixsets coming.
Hour 2: Joel Armstrong (
http://www.myspace.com/joelarmstrong
)
Joel got into electronic music around 95 listening to 2 Unlimited and Ace of Base and that wonderful CD, Dance Mix 95!. His main influence has been his close friendship with Colin & Justin of Shiloh. Music on the progressive angle has been his passion for a number of years now, much of it tinged with a bit of an Asian feel, credited to the 15 years he spent growing up in Indonesia. His popularity as a producer skyrocketed when his music was featured in Shilohs monthly show on Proton Radio.
With more than 35 releases from 11 different labels currently on Beatport.com, Joel has become a force in the EDM scene to be reckoned with. He also works with fellow producer Micah as A&R for their label Ruhnsong Recordings.

depends. I need to move the show around to different genres I know. I'm stuck in a prog rut
Don't expect a hard house/gabber show though.

Fitzpatrick or Oneel could serve that orderve. I mean like Progressive dont get me wrong, I just like to hear harder tracks, its like eating pizza, its good for a couple of days, but then you lose the taste of it and want a cheeseburger.

mmm....tasty!!!!
The voiceover is a lot better (EQ and compression wise), just need to edit it down some when you're going "um" and "arrr" gives a bad impression. Just try making notes before you record so it flows better. Also it still feels like you might be holding back your voice in the recording be more confident in what your saying - don't shout it, just talk loudly like 404 has done on "The Show". This'll give a better impression. The first few were ok, cos you weren't sure about it, but now you're getting more listeners you can be sure of what you're doing etc... It may only be a small part of the whole show, but its quite important for first impressions if the listener happens to be a first-timer.
Good stuff Reds (
), keep it up!

This is another display of fine DJing skills by brothers in Christ. This is the first time I heard Matt spin and I am impressed. It is an exciting selection of tracks going all the way back to 81 or something like that
. Joels set is very techy and even industrial sometimes. I need to listen to it again to let it soak in. Its a little hard to take in the first time.

haha, yeah my tastes have been migrating a lot. about half or more of the tunes in the set are my own tunes or remixes.

Here's Joel's new bio....
Joel armstrong is a guy. He lives in Vancouver. he makes music, and sometimes plays music. Joel is singlehandedly responsible for inventing the genre of House, but did so only after he taught Thomas Bangalter how to use a 303.
Joel was born in a small shack in Banff National Park in 1765 to Bulgarian immigrants. After completing his education at Bob's House of Power Tools, Joel became the first Prime Minister in Canadian history to hold the titles "Chancellor of the Exchecquer" and "Supreme Overlord of Ellsemere Island." He defeated the Nazis in 1871 shortly after building the first light bulb for Thomas Edison in Letohatchee, Alabama. Joel set his sights on biggert things at that time, such as developing a cure for Rabies and searching for the world's most perfect burrito.
in 1923, Joel moved to Bosnia where he singlehandedly put an end to internal problems by giving leaders of each side a shiny new penny to buy a pack of gum. He moved to Germany in 1939 to compete in the Olympics, but this was quickly cut short by the outbreak of Disco in 1969.
Today, Joel lives in the backwoods of Chilliwack in a small shed made entirely out of pop tarts with his pet gerbil, Superfly. Joel makes music on a Commodore 64 powered by nothing more than his positive energy.
