I'm a firm believer in media manipulation for ratings though. Even with his publicly stated opinions, I can see the media misrepresenting them. Not to really pick a political issue, but the one that comes to mind is the Fair Tax plan which the media has been repeatedly documented in first lying about the plan and then criticizing it based on their lies.
Falwell did publicly say things that did harm, but my question is did the media report what he said in context or as sound bites that they chose? My guess is it was more of the latter so they could demonize him more than he demonized himself.
I'm not giving Falwell a free pass. Don't get me wrong. I'm just not going to give the media's handling of him one either.

I think even talking about the question of media bias, when it comes to Fallwel, misses the point.
To take a sophisticated professional broadcaster like Fallwel and deflect criticism of him by arguing that others in the media misrepresented him IS giving him a pass. I think Mr. Fallwel would prefer to be held to account for what he actually said and did, much of which is quite well documented BECAUSE he was as sophisticated and savy as he was.
For Fallwel, and his peers (there aren't many), it isn't about "The Media" or even a given medium. It is about the message, which I don't think he had trouble getting to his audience. If he did we wouldn't be talking about him.
Thus we return to what he actually said, which I'm not prepared to discuss, but which I would encourage everbody to look into. Love it, hate it or both, that is the man's legacy.

Fine
I do think Jerry said some pretty rough things. I wasn't present to hear ANY of it. Neither were you (I'm guessing). You probably heard some of it, but not all. The vast number of ppl in this nation probably never heard a word of it, but instead only heard what the media wanted them to hear on the 11 o'clock news.
I do need to research exactly what he said, but I will be skeptical of it all unless i see it in fully context.
