Well it depends what music apps do you use?  Commercial apps etc... 

There are no ports of most music apps to linux so that is why I haven't switched over.  I used to use linux long ago as my primary OS.  For now I just use it for my MythTV (DVR/Media) computer.

i would suggest getting the Ubuntu Live CD and try it out for a while and see how you like it. The live cd runs off your cd rom drive and has most of the basic stuff you'll need to give it a good test run, without altering anything on your PC.

Theres also Knoppix you can use with installing anything. I used it a coupleof times to get a feel for the layout.

I have been looking into this, too.  I don't see myself switching over entirely, but I might want to do certain things with it.

There is a sampler in development called Linux Sampler that looks pretty cool.  There is JackLab, which is based on SuSE Linux, and Studio To Go which you are supposed to be able to run off of a live CD. 

What have you already looked into?
