range?

as far as I have read, hadn't made a huge leap and wanna make me run out and get one from my 002R.  I heard they have put in better preamps and added some extra functions but thats it.

I guess its the thought of how many update version it will be before 002 is outdated like they did to me on the 001, they suck.

There are some improvements, they actually are using the chips that Motu has been using for firewire on there older models, because they are very stable.  Your box isn't outdated really, if you want better sound and do external entry get the black lion audio modification, your box will sound great afterwards.  Digidesign's d/a conversion is pretty much junk I think.  I'd get a outbaord preamp like a ISA series focusrite or something that fits your taste.  I try not to play the upgrade game really, something like a new 003 isn't going to do much for your music, especially if you already have a interface.

I just have good credit, somewhat Wink paid on that thing for a year or so.

...if you want better sound and do external entry get the black lion audio modification

whats that? is that for the 002R?

I'd get a outbaord preamp like a ISA series focusrite or something that fits your taste.

yeah Focusrites are awesome.  What do you think of M-Audio's Octane and Tampa pre's?  The Octane is something Im looking at, not only its a preamp, also has my extra 8 channels i can get cause its lightpipe output also.  What do you think of Presonus and is there any other 8 ch interfaces with digital out on it that you would recommend?

Well as far as recommendations if you already have a digidesign unit I would talk to black lion audio and get the upgrade for your current unit if available.  It would give you better sound quality if you record vocals, synths etc etc, much better.  The preamps and the d/a conversion/clocks in most of the digidesign, and motu units aren't very good, just ok.  All the functions are great but when you a/b them to high end units they don't compare. If you let me know what you have and what you want to do, I may be able to point you in the right direction easier.

If I had to start fresh I would look around, but I was considering a Mytek, Apogee, or metric halo has come up as a great unit.

Maudio products are basically junk toys in the real world.  And as far as the preamp comments yeah stay with a the real brands you'll be happy.  Presonus is just another brand out there, if you want something good get a ISA focusrite, chandler, or an API type unit.

Its more the software side that comes with the hardware that concerns me, the 001 stopped at V6.4 at V7 they decided to utilise a duel core proccessor which I have V6.4 has issues with it, the box I am happy with I am not major high end its the software that holds the unit back.

Well digidesign should have driver updates for the 001 to work with the new software if you get it?  The software update has nothing to do with the hardware box itself though, so its not holding it back, it will be the same either way.  Dual core is nice though, it just gives you bigger processing speeds while you work.

I've never had any problems with M-Audio products.  I've never heard them referrred to as junk,  and they've served myself and most of my friends quite well.

That breing said,  I'm with Dunamis...This sound card doesn't excite me to the point where I wanna run out and get one now.

Justin M's had some issues with M-audio's interfaces. I know mine for some reason will crash/lockup when I exit my prog, but not everytime. That is a driver issue.

Styke is busy calling the x-session and x-session pros junk.

All I'm saying is that I've heard bad. I personally haven't had a critical problem with m-audio yet though.

Tell me what,  in that sentence,  might cause a problem.....;-)  (hoping Justin reads this....)

But seriously...M-Audio controllers,  I'm not too big on.  I've always been a Novation kinda guy.  I've never had issues with the cards though

Well I have a Digidesign 002 Rack as i have said already.  I as of now just write music and use my interface to record a vocal here and there, my virus, bass guitar and regular guitar (acoustic and electric) and a keyboard.  Eventually down the road I want to get a eight channel interface to pipe into my 002R since its expandable to 16 channels by way of lightpipe.  so the other interface would need a digital output on it to connect to my 002R.  I'll take a look at the Black Lion Audio stuff.

I've never had any problems with M-Audio products.  I've never heard them referrred to as junk,  and they've served myself and most of my friends quite well.

I'm not jumping on a 003 simply cause I have a 002R and don't see much improvement as    I stated earlier.

their BX8s and BX5s speakers are great for the money.  I've listened to them up against 5-6 other brands and only other ones I like are the new versions of the NS10s.  Mackie, JBL, KRK, Event, and Alesis speakers, most were lacking clarity, too much bass or missed some frequencies.  Only other ones I want to hear are Adam, Tannoy, Genelec cause I've seen them referred as the next step in speaker quality.

M-Audio makes good interfaces, Delta 1010 did me well before I got the 002 which I still use the 1010 for some midi here and there.  then we have one at church.

You get what you pay for with audio products. You don't want to skimp on conversion its a crucial piece, I wish I would of learned that earlier.

Actually in testing Mackie blew away pretty much anything you have listed.  Obviously the genelecs are better, but the HR824's are insanely flat.

+1 to Strobian....I've never heard any monitor speaker that was better than the Mackie 824.

I've heard good things about Tannoy monitors,  but I've never actually heard them in use.
