I bought Borat today at CD Tradepost (the store I used to work at) today. I haven't watched it yet, but I am concerned that it might be a bootlegged copy. The guys I used to work with (so I know them well and I know they wouldn't lie to me) tell me that's the way it was packaged. It looks like a bad print job and it has that bootlegged look. Granted I admit it could look like that to look like it had been bootlegged in Kazikstan. I'm gonna go to Walmart tonight to see if I can compare the way the ones sold there with my copy. Just something doesn't seem right with it. Either the marketing guys are brilliant or someone did indeed bootleg this dvd and the guys at CD tradepost fell for it.

This excerpt from pluggedin magazines review was enough for me to NOT watch it:
Emphasis added by me for clarity's sake
Quote from: Plugged In
Finding himself abandoned, dejected and penniless,
Borat wanders into a Pentecostal church.
There, the message of the gospel is explicitly preached, with songs such as "There Is Power in the Blood" playing in the background.
An evangelist not only explains to Borat
that
Jesus came as God manifested in the flesh,
he also speaks of
the Lord's sacrifice on the cross to forgive our sins with the shedding of His blood.
Even more poignant is when the (supposedly) heartbroken, desolate
Borat hears that Jesus' limitless love extends to anyone and everyone
, no matter what they've done or who they are.
"Can Jesus heal pain in my heart?" the foreigner asks.
After being told that, yes, Jesus can heal even that,
Borat is led in the sinner's prayer.
Maybe not since The Apostle have I witnessed onscreen such a lengthy depiction of God's transforming power and His ever-open embrace to the brokenhearted. Sadly, though,
it's meant—as is every second of this film—only to summon giggles and guffaws.
When
Borat pretends to accept Jesus, "fall out in the Spirit" and speak in tongues (as others around him are doing), moviegoers at the screening I attended burst into hysterics.
That's not the only clue that Borat's conversion is just another kooky exercise in acerbic jest, either. The following scene begins with him declaring that now it would be
"me and my friend, Mr. Jesus" together on his sexual pursuit of Pamela Anderson.
Though for reasons more cultural than spiritual,
Borat hates Jews.
One flashback shows a
"Running of the Jew"
festival in Kazakhstan,
where young boys tear through the streets trying to beat up a person dressed up in a caricatured costume of a "Jew." When "Mrs. Jew" lays a gigantic egg in the street, they are instructed to "crush that Jew chick before it hatches." (Yes, it's supremely offensive.) Incidentally, at the end of the movie, the "converted" Borat says his people no longer conduct the "Running of the Jew" festivals. "We are Christians now," he explains. The camera then shows townsfolk using a pitchfork to poke at an elderly Jewish man hanging on a cross.
God, help all of us (and him)!

John thank you for sharing pluggedin's review. That is not the point of this post. You are taking it to a spiritual discussion. I am asking about the cover.
After doing some research I have discovered that yes, it is supposed to look like a pirated dvd.

I should probably keep my yap shut, but this bothered me enough that I gotta say something.
This is the "Chill Out" forum, Chris, where "TF" stands for "Threadjack Frequently". I won't go so far as to say that the majority of threads in this forum have OT posts in them, but a ton do. John's is better than a lot because his post is at least partially related to your original post. Also, d-dub had already provided your answer before John made his post. You'd gotten what you wanted out of the thread before John said anything, so what's the big deal?
What disturbed me more though is whipping out the "spiritual discussion" card to shut John up. In this forum, I've seen lots of people give their opinions about movies, both good and bad. It's been okay for someone to say that they liked a movie for "non-spiritual" and "spiritual" reasons and that they disliked a movie for "non-spiritual" reasons. However, your reply to John would make it seem that, if someone dislikes a movie for "spiritual" reasons, suddenly it's a "spiritual discussion".
If John had used the male-on-male nude wrestling scene complete with genital-to-face mash ups as his reason for not wanting to see the movie, would he have gotten the "SD" slap? My guess is not. However, when his reason is that the movie is irreverent and blasphemous and makes a mockery of salvation and Jesus Christ, he's essentially told to shut up.
There is just something terrible wrong with that picture.
I'm not trying to beat you up, Chris. You're a good guy. This just really bothered me.

I don't get why Christians want to watch devil's productions out of Hollywood. Apostle Paul was right saying "You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons".

So we shouldn't play/listen to non Christian music then?
j/k j/k... Now that would be a spiritual discussion that has probably been replicated many a time on this forum.
But we should be careful what we watch/listen to/read. We shouldn't be dangling our roots in a dirty river flowing from sin, but the never failing stream flowing from God.
Quote from: Matt7: 15-20
15"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

I haven't seen the movie, although I did see a few of the Borat bits from the Ali G show, and I don't think that character really had anything to do with Islam. It was more the idea of taking people's perception of some random backwater eastern European country, picking the name of an actual place (Kazakhstan) to see to what extent he could get people to humor him, get angry, or maybe bring out some attitudes they have that they are normally good at hiding. As far as I know, Islam has never been common in those places, not to mention that I imagine some of the attitudes the character shows a "good" Muslim would be likely to find abhorrent. Anti-Jewish bigotry certainly isn't the domain of any one group of people. (I realize there's other random stuff in the movie that I probably wouldn't care to watch.)

While I do agree that some secular media can be harmless, I agree with others in that this movie is not fitting entertainment for a Christian according to Biblical guidelines.
The Bible is pretty obvious about conviction to keep our thoughts on that which is worthy and that includes what we allow in our choice of entertainment. If you disagree, I think you should read this
http://www.ch-of-christ.beaverton.or.us/Our_Speech.htm
.
According to the Bible it not only matters if we participate in sinful behavior, but also if we approve of those who do (i.e. watching, promoting or buying a movie with pervasive, crude and grotesque sexual content and language.) I do not wish to condemn you, but to encourage you that there are far better forms of entertainment (secular and Christian) with which you can fill your mind without engaging in such worldly and sinful humor.

The point of my post was not to tell John to shut up. I would never do that. That is rude. I was using the spiritual discussion thing because I know that there are a lot of people who don't like Borat based on some theology stand point. I was simply trying to keep things peaceful by avoiding a spiritual discussion which I already knew would cause what has already started.
If you don't like Borat, fine. I've never seen the film. I had no interest in seeing it until it got so much attention that my interest was peaked. I still haven't watched it yet. I'll probably watch it this weekend.

Chris, sorry for misreading the tone and intent of your post. I understand now what you were trying to do (and avoid).
I've come to realize that this particular movie is kind of a touchy topic for me. I am amazed at the number of Christians who have seen it and who have really liked it. Every "positive" review or comment I've heard about it goes along the lines of "it's completely gross, insulting, and offensive, but it was funny, so you should go see it."
Anyway, I'll shut up now....
