Get your mix played on RadioU

Update: The new show will air beginning March 10th. I've had some good submissions so far, but could certainly use more for plenty of variety. Contact me for details:
nick@radiou.com
Greetings, everyone who reads this. My name is Nick Stutzman, and I'm the Production Director at RadioU. For all intents and purposes, I took over when Matt Risher moved to Cincy. Also, I had the insane task of trying to replace him as resident DJ of the Electric Circus, which we were certainly blessed by having 3kStatic fill in that role temporarily. I say temporarily because God has been directing the staff here to make some larger sweeping changes to our weekend lineup. As of now, we've got a weekend request show, "The Friday & Saturday Street Party". We have a dedicated hiphop show, "Planet Hiphop", and of course, a dedicated electronic music show, "The Electric Circus." The vision we have for our weekend lineup is to combine elements of all 3 shows into one.
This "UberShow" is yet to be named, but it will be a request show, peppered with 10-15 minute mixed hiphop and electronic music segments. It will air on both Friday and Saturday nights, from 7pm to 3am. So, why do you care about this? Well, the vision that God has given
me
in all this is to allow talented DJs and producers to showcase their stuff on national primetime radio. The Electric Circus ran from 12am-2am on Saturday night. With the new format, electronic sets can be heard on Friday and Saturday, starting at 7pm until 3am (and on the west coast, 4pm to midnight). RadioU is based in Columbus, OH on 88.7 FM, Springfield OH on 98.7 FM, with affilliates in Marion IN, Lompoc CA, San Luis Obispo CA, and soon in Circleville, Dayton, and Mt. Vernon OH. You'll have a nice sized audience.
Also, our Electric Circus online stream is the most popular on our site, so we're not about to get rid of that. The stream will remain intact, updated each week with the electronic sets that were featured in the weekly show. So, anyone can access an "all electronic" stream from the website. Nothing mind blowing, but some may have wondered.
Ok, now down to the nitty gritty. What we're looking for, as I stated before, is regular submissions of mixes no longer than 15 minutes. You
could
submit a longer mix, but I'd have to cut it down. If you are a producer, this would need to be a 15 minute mix of
only your created original work
. If you are a DJ, this would need to be a 15 minute mix of
only Christian artists' original work
. The purpose of the new show, and RadioU as a whole, is to lead people to Christ, and to showcase talent from artists who share in that vision.
Submitting a mix to RadioU does not guarantee airplay, but it does give us permission to air your work. All mixes are subject to review by the RadioU Music Department before airing. We will never sell anything that is submitted to us. OK, enough blah blah.
So, how do you submit your mix? Well, first just email me at the station (no PM's please). The email is
nick@radiou.com
. Please let me know if you have webspace to host your mix so that I can download it from you. Don't send your mix via email.
You can mail me a CD if you'd like , and I can provide you an address after you email me.
Oh, and before anyone asks, yes... we've been working with 3kStatic to decide on these changes.
They will continue to play a role as a featured mixset artist. And so can you!
If you need any more info about RadioU, just check out

Yes, I know, we're sorry... but for a typical primetime radio listener, 15 minutes is all they'll be sticking around for anyway. Breakbeat DJ's will have no problem, but the rest of you might need to do some quicker segs.
I'd say to try to cram in 3 tracks if possible... keep it interesting. If you overshoot 15 minutes, its not the end of the world.
Thanks for your interest!

Odd. I'm not denying your stats. I know in Atlanta, we have a mix show on a top 40 commercial (not college) station that starts at 8 and goes WELL into the middle of the night. It's all only long mix, but they have commercial breaks. It's been running for years now so it must be doing pretty good.
The difference is that they mix in remixes of top 40 songs, hip-hop and some of the deeper dance stuff. Maybe... Just maybe... you could do something similar where instead of 15 min mixes, you could do 30 min ones, or simply break longer mixes up to blend them for variety.
Soo... you could do 15-30 min of hip-hop followed by 15-30 of synthpop followed by 15-30 of CCM remixes (lyrics) and so on.
Another thing... have you listened to any of
DJ 404's shows
? You should. He's doing something VERY similar to what you are discussing right now. I think you should get in touch with him about this. Not DOING it for you, but to help figure out the structure of the show.

Yeah, 404 popped into my head immediately when I read that too. Maybe drop him a PM. He will have some great suggestions if nothing else.

In concept, 404's show is similar to what we're doing... the only difference is that we're a rock station by definition. The bulk of the new show will be rock requests, with live caller interaction, as the current weekend show is. We're not a CHR or top 40 station. We're 1 of only 2 purely rock stations in the city. But, we want to expose those rock listeners to everything else out there... just not in a huge block that may cause some of them to find something else to listen to. So, that's why we've settled on the 15 min. time limit for now. That is certainly flexible, as I'll be the producer of the show
Also, we would definitely like to have dance remixes of the tracks we play, as Matt Risher had done in the past... so that's open for anyone who might like to work on something like that. Our top 40 tracks at any given time can be found at shop.radiou.com.
Anyway, thanks for your comments, now I need some mixes!!

Hey Nick!
great stuff you guys are doing up there in RadioU! I've actually used your programing as a guide to our radio show
GNX :: Radio Revolution
. I really respect what you guys are doing upthere. Top quality stuff. I've always wished we had something similar here in Miami, until God gave me the opportunity to deejay on TWO radio programs Friday Night Fuego and GNX Radio Rev!
Unlike the U, we're more of a Top40 style show since we're in Miami and the urban market rules here. I tried last year doing more alternative rock (not so heavy) but it didn't quite work. We had a 15 min segment called the Trance.formed Sessions that was a HUGE success (Glory to God) and now we're able to expand that between 45 - 60 min! And GNX is now more of a Party-style program. We're targeting the clubhopper and partyjunky from 10pm - 3 am along with Christians.
Dude, here at TF is the perfect spot to get good stuff. The deejays/artists here are real cool. If theres anything I can do to help (besides mixes, at least not yet) let me know. Radio U has blessed me in a big way and again, I feel like The U is my Mr. Miaggi and GNX Daniel Son (tho we're the only ones who know it... hehe)
Anyway man, enough rant. This has nothing to do with your post, frankly, but wanted to share. Hit me up and checkout our show when you can. I've uploaded some stuff on our myspace. Myspace.com/GNX883

this is difficult, i'd love to contribute but i do a lot of work with artists that aren't christians, so if i submit a mix with tunes i've collaborated on with. how is that really different than me submitting a mix of tunes i really like, just not xtian artists..? and if most of it has no lyrics, how is it supposed to lead people to Christ? i hope you can appreciate the awkward position this puts me in if i wanted to submit material.

Your sentiments are certainly valid, as this is a confusing issue that comes up from time to time. That being said, I'd like to give you the perspective here at the station. The general cornerstone of RadioU is that "your song is your prayer". We all know that music and spirituality are infinitely linked. So, it has always been a firm standard that the music coming over the airwaves is linked to artists who possess the Holy Spirit, as the music is not the one who changes lives, the Spirit is. This can be applied to anything. When we lead another person to Christ, its' not our words, but the Spirit working through us. Nobody can experience the Lord unless the Spirit draws them to Himself.
Thus, the ever confusing issue of collaborating with non-Christians. Usually, this is handled on a case by case basis. For example, the various mixes of Deepsky & Marc Mitchell's "Lost In The Moment" were incredible, and certainly inspired by the Spirit. But, if an artist wanted to create a dance mix of Marilyn Manson...well...yeah. So, the source material certainly matters, but what matters the most is... you! You're filled with the Holy Spirit. Changes that you make to the source material are inspired by the Lord. The Lord changes lives, not the music. Music, like everything in this world, is just another medium that God uses to communicate with his creation, and his creation uses to communicate with Him.
So, in summary, don't be afraid to submit what you've worked on. You've got the Spirit to let you know what would be appropriate or not. We just want to showcase individual artists' work, so that was why I made the
bold proclamation
in the first place. Thanks!

as you kids with your new fangled portable 8-track players say "that's just how radioU rolls".
