How much do your needles affect the sound? I understand that the records are a controller, but since the actual song is on the computer, I was wondering how important good needles are.

Short answer: not really.
Long answer: With Serato Scratch Live and FinalScratch, the needle only affects to sound quality to the extent that the software is able to quickly and correctly track the location in the song, which is to say, if the needle or the record is really bad/worn down you won't get good sound. I'm not sure about FinalScratch, but recent versions of Serato have a meter showing how good the tracking is so that you know when you need to replace the record/needle/whatever.

usually you need a higher output needle, the compression of the mp3 affects the quality and of courese the record wear.

I've used many different types of cartridges on my serato setup. As others had said, it really doesn't affect the sound quality. You would however, want a cartridge that has very little cue-burn, and can track well. For my purposes, i found the sure m44g to be the best all around for scratch live and vinyl. But then again nasty old stanton 500-ALs seems to work ok too for scratch live.
