If I said Ableton Live were like a Swiss Army Knife you might expect this article to be a laundry list of features.  So, I’m not going to say that.  A plethora of features doesn’t win the day.  Functionality and usability do.  Live is an elegantly designed audio program, built in such a clever way that it does a number of things well. Digital DJing is one of them.

I've got the Live 5 Digidesign Edition. I haven't explored it properly yet, i think i will now tho!

btw, galadriel is a nice name for a hard drive. My xbox is called Evenstar (its got UV led mods in it). though i name my hard drives thus: Lyddonica (system), Repuplic (external), and County (memory stick), etc... relative to their size.

Really good article. Will be trying it out soon - and maybe i'll be able to post the results here somewhere!

Cool!  Thanks for noticing.  I made the mistake of naming one of my servers at work Isildur.  The only other people who "got it" didn't use it so I had to give it a second, boring, name as well.

Like your scheme too.  Always more fun with a pattern.

Check out the December SOS piece on warping.  It covers some pretty foundational stuff that I did not address.  Sound On Sound and Music Tech Magazine both run quality how-to articles on Live and other apps regularly.  The MTM ones often have acompanying tutorial files on the cover disk.  MTM also costs $15 an issue, but that's probably OK for a paper magzine that comes with 3GB of digital content on a DVD.

I'm really glad to hear that!

...it makes me think after all is said and done, I _was_ right to cut those hundreds of lines of humorous anecdotes about my dogs and stick to writing about Live. Smiley

I really enjoyed the article but will probably stick to spinning cd's for now.
Would I get bored "warping" every track? And no headphones? They make me look so cool!

Thanks again!

You are right.  Headphones are a key piece of DJ chic.

You could keep using a standard mixer but add a laptop as a thrid source or replace one of the CD decks with the laptop.

If you have two audio outputs on the Live setup you can still cue to headphones without a mixer.  It's just that if you know how the clips are going to sound/behave before hand you don't need the headphones.

To me... you STILL HAVE TO HAVE HEADPHONES. Unless you know every track and every mix of every track in your collection, you will want to preview a track prior to mixing it in. It would really suck if you thought you were mixing in a hard electro breaks track and it turned out that you grabbed the ambient mix instead.

but yeah... since I abhor beatmatching... I'm all for ableton. I'm all flash and no skillz.

Personal attacks are fun! Especially when they involve Dave on the receiving end. Or 404, for that matter! Grin

By the way, Dave, I have a 2-hour layover in Atlanta on March 19. Wanna wave at me from the other side of the security maze? Wink
