I KNOW I am funnier than Dat Phan.

This was an interesting homework assignment from my CD Tradepost job. I figured I'd post my list here and see how I compare to the rest of you's...

Chris’ Top Ten Songs Of All Time
This was a much harder assignment than I initially thought. How does one sum up the top ten best songs of all time without excluding ones that are truly great and deserving? I know there are a lot more that would probably be better on this list, so to make it easier, I went with the songs that have helped to define who I am today and why I listen to the music I listen to now.

1.   In The Air Tonight – Phil Collins
I love everything about this song, from the lyrics to the intensity in the tone of the music. It builds with a tension so strong to the point that the song has no where to go but explode with one of the most amazing drum rolls ever set to a song. This song defined why I am a Phil Collins fan.
2.   Tennessee – Arrested Development
I can’t really pinpoint why this song holds a place in my heart other than the fact that it has a great beat with lyrics that reflect a man’s very personal thoughts and prayers.
3.   Go – Moby
One of the simplest, yet most perfect, techno songs ever created. It’s aged well over the years, and even today with it’s current reinvention it has proven again that it is timeless.
4.   The Power – Snap!
From the guitar riff, the vocal hook, and the authoritative lyrics, this dance song commands respect.
5.   Pump Up The Jam – Technotronic
This is right up there with “The Power”. It set a standard in house music that all others had to live up to and let the world know that house music just became mainstream.
6.   Here We Go…Let’s Rock and Roll – C+C Music Factory
Undoubtedly, most people will pick “Gonna Make You Sweat” for a C+C favorite. Not me. It’s good, but “Here We Go” has so much more to offer. Perfect synth hits, great breakbeat, a better lyrical flow from Freedom Williams.
7.   Summertime – DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
While the bulk of the music is a sample of “Summer Madness” from Kool & The Gang, the thing that does it for me in this song is Will Smith’s flawless description of a nice summer day in Philly. You could put these lyrics behind any music and it would still be the same for me. They flow perfectly off lyricists lips.
8.   Fly Me To The Moon – Frank Sinatra
Although I have heard it all my life, I became a fan of this song when I heard it at the end of “Space Cowboys”. There was something almost magical in that final scene with this song playing.
9.   She’s Out Of My Life – Michael Jackson
I could have picked any MJ song from the late 70’s and early 80’s and won, but I once heard Quincy Jones talk about how Michael nailed this song. The emotions that were written in these lyrics and Michael was so young and inexperienced in relationships, yet he captured the heartbreak so effortlessly. It’s very rarely heard, yet this is my favorite MJ song of all time.
10.   Where The Streets Have No Name – U2
You can pick just about any song off “The Joshua Tree” album, really, but this one has a meaning that stands out to me on a spiritual level.

no possible way of narrowing it down to 10. the first couple are accurate. the others i equally love along with 100 other songs.  i'll try to include a variety of genres including edm.

1. David Bowie - Sound & Vision     it's bowie & eno at their best. the perfect pop song, imo

2. The Yardbirds - For Your Love  another perfect pop song from a band that invented blues based hard rock (ever hear of jeff beck, jimmy page, & eric clapton? they were all guitarists in this band)

3. Howard Jones - New Song   a song about an 'over the hill' 28yr old guy who worked in a saran wrap factory that went after his dream of making music.

4. Gary Numan - Down In The Park     the best new-wave-sci-fi songwriter ever.

5. Robert Miles - Children a revelation. the first 'dream trance' (eurotrance) song with the perfect melody that still sounds amazing.

6. The Chameleons UK - Don't Fall    one of my favorite bands of the 80's. i urge you to read about them (& who they influenced)
           http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chameleons_UK

7. Stone Roses - Fools Gold    if you've read any of my "best of" posts, this is my favorite club song of all time, hands down.

8. The Clash - Train In Vain   i hate to single out a track on london calling, but this would be the one. any punk fan should own this album. it's one of the most important punk albums ever.

9. U2-I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For   hard to pick just 1 U2 song, but this one is so simple yet profound.  the older (& hopefully wiser) i get, the more this song speaks to me.

10 The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows   i'm sure many of you have been hammered with the "the beatles are the greatest" hammer wayyyy too much, but you simply must own revolver & rubber soul by them. they're textbooks in how to write a song.
"Revolver wouldn't remain the Beatles' most ambitious LP for long, but many fans--including this one--remember it as their best. An object lesson in fitting great songwriting into experimental production and genre play, this is also a record whose influence extends far beyond mere they-was-the-greatest cheerleading. "

honorable mentions most of which you won't know and/or don't care about:
Albion - Air
icehouse-street cafe
the cure-let's go to bed (listen to the lyrics.)
echo & the bunnymen - the killing moon
this picture-naked rain
the doors-peace frog
Led Zeppelin - The Immigrant Song
ride-leave them all behind
the smiths-what difference does it make?
depeche mode-people are people
nirvana - smells like teen spirit

big band:
glenn miller-in the mood
benny goodman-sing,sing,sing

great voices:
patsy cline-walkin' after midnight
frank sinatra-my way
the carpenters-pick one...

great producers:
ELO-evil woman
abba-dancing queen

classic goth:
sisters of mercy-this corrosion
bauhaus-bela lugosi's dead
joy division-love will tear us apart

I literally have nothing to do today SO...

1. Echo and the Bunnymen - Heaven Up Here: Lots of energy. It's a slow song but it feels fast. I'll just keep it to one from the b-men, Davo mentioned Killing Moon which is just a classic.

2. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit: not their best song but when it came out, my jaw dropped.

3. The Beatles - Across the Universe: Actually, there's a version from a strange industrial band called Laibach which is much better than the original.

4. The Cure - Fascination Street: Again, probably not their best but there's just something about it.

5. U2 - All I Want Is You: As good as the song is, the video is better. The imagery is about a circus clown/midget who falls in love with a female trapeze/acrobat and it's really emotional. It makes me kind of weepy. I can't think of the song without thinking of the video.

6. New Order - Regret: Blue Monday is what kind of got me hooked on all things electronic but Regret is my hands down favorite from them.

7. Wire - Ahead: These guys were so far ahead of their time it's not even funny.

8. Chameleons (not the Chameleons UK who I also dig) - In Shreds

9. The Police - Man In a Suitcase: This song makes me just want to jump around. Can you believe it's been 30 years since the Police recorded Roxanne? I feel old. There are reunion rumors floating...the Synchronicity album is like the soundtrack to my high school memories.

10. The Clash - Clampdown

Heh, yeah, I will take a stab at this too.

But, I probably will have some tracks on there that are quite rare.  I suppose that would be par for the course though.

1. Deitiphobia - Enraptured.
~ Hands down, the best song on the entire planet. I wore out two cassettes of this in the first year I had it.   Beautiful lyrics, great syth/industrial track that makes me wish I could write music like this.

2. Scott Blackwell - Ensoul
~ I won't say much about this track other than it rocks.  I still listen to it and go crazy. It is one of the few tracks that will always get me dancing.

3. U2 - I still haven't found what I am looking for

~ Yeah, this song has always been on my top ten. It has great lyrics, hints a bit at Bono's early christian walk, and rocks a melody later in the song. Plus, you can't beat that video for it. U2 has always made great music but this song is one of their best.

4. Michael W. Smith - Ashton
~ Probably the single most influencial factor that dropped me into music production. I love this song so much. And even now when I listen to it I am amazed at his songwriting skills. This was definately the prequel to the Freedom album.

5. Energy52 - Cafe Del Mar
~ Yep, still the best trance/dance track ever. I have every remix ever written (although the Hybrid one takes the cake).  Give me some of whatever those were having the day they wrote this track...

6. David Phelps - The End of the Beginning

~ I don't even like this style of music (vocal pop) but this song is so so so amazing. It is an easter themed song about Jesus and has one of the coolest choruses ever. It is probably the only song the makes me cry every time.

7. John Williams - Indiana Jones Theme song
~ What do you mean, you don't like this song?  You got to be kidding!  Listen to it again. See, I told ya.   Yeah, ok so the movie is classic but you can't beat that adventure melody.

8. Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F
~ I knew how to play this on the piano long before I knew what movie it was from. It still makes me want to dance.  Classic electronic music from before I even knew what that was.

9. SolarFields - Blue Moon Station

~ I don't doubt that only a few of you have heard this track. But that is ok, because I enjoy knowing something that no one else does... namely, this track is amazing.

10. Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds
~ Yeah, something about this track always makes me think of the summer of my salvation. It has always been one of those songs that you can't really get sick of. The live version is even better.

So, anyway... that's my list.   It probably changes a little bit every year but in general this is the final answer.

Oop... well, let me rephrase that.  HAD every remix.   I am pretty sure I had that awhile back but between theft (my car was broken into) and a little friendly dj trading...   well, you know, I don't have it anymore.   I remember it being a pretty bangin mix though.

8. Chameleons (not the Chameleons UK who I also dig) - In Shreds

same band  Smiley  they had to add the "UK" in the USA due to another band having the name.  in shreds is classic! i used to own the original 7"    (nice list, btw)

Very close, if not equal…

11.   Ride- vapour trail
20.   Siouxsie and the banshees- ornaments of gold
22.   Opus III- a fine day
23.   Peter Murphy – cut you up
24.   Cure-fascination street

bonus points for these in my eyes, esp. ride Smiley  actually my fave by them is 'chrome waves' (either version),but hey, how accurate can one of these lists be?

These top ten arent in any order of importance, but rather the order of styles I started listening to, well actually top fifteen, sorry.  Embarrassed

When I was first introduced to christian music in general, my dad let me hear these two groups called Mylon Lefevre & Broken Heart and Petra.  While both are great bands, I got hooked onto Petra.  When I was able to afford to get cds, Petra was the first.

Then after those, within a year or two, along came these:
1. dc Talk - Jesus Freak
2. Third Day - Consuming Fire

For a couple of years I listened to moderate rock and comptemporary christian, started to listen to mainstream stuff too, like Creed, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Staind, and many more that I cant remember.  So rock music got progressively harder for me.  Then I picked up cds with these on them:

3. POD - Southtown
4. Pillar - Open Your Eyes
5. Linkin Park - One Step Closer
and the rest is history, many more groups that came out, mostly christian, I picked up and loved it.

Growing up in church, we always sang hymns and choruses, but after hearing this group/ministry called Passion, even the worship music changed:

6. Chris Tomlin - The Noise We Make
7. Charlie Hall - Salvation

My first steps into electronic music was hearing the Mortal Kombat Soundtrack (yes, I said it) and hearing mainstream remixes, but wanted music without the words but didnt know where to look.  Eventually after high school, God opened doors and I started finding music, met someone, got some records and euipment and rest is history.  My first two genres that I encountered, you guessed it, Trance and Drum n Bass.

8. Traci Lords - Control (Juno Reactor Remix)
Favorite track off the Mortal Kombat soundtrack

9. Delerium - Silence (DJ Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise Remix)
Favorite track off my first dj mix cd

10. Silexz - Inner Workings
A rare gem that not too many know about, but Silexz is a friend and unsigned artist that has great potential, just hasnt been able to write a full cd yet.  He told me he will eventually after school.  I first saw his music on the site Acidplanet where I had joined also and still consider him one of the best of that site.  I provided a link in the title to hear the song.

11. Dom & Roland - Soundwall
First drum n bass record I heard and man, I was hooked.  The heaviness, the bass, the drums, the intensity.  Still I havent found a mp3 yet of it, cause both copies of the record isnt exactly clean, so I cant really record it to get a crystal clear copy.  This got my interest in drum n bass

Eventually during and after I began DJing, I found Christian Dance which excited me, never knew there was such thing cause I had been buying just normal records.  heres some fav's of my first encounters:

12. Apt Core - Life Inverted
great electronica track, he is Will Hunt, former drummer for the Charlie Hall band

13. Hallelujah 2000 - Code of Ethics
When Code of Ethics went electronic, first four tracks are nice.

14. Andy Hunter - Amazing
15. Andy Hunter - GO
First real christian dance tracks (as in ones that could be mixed well) that caught my attention.  Andy Hunter is still one of my favorites esp after meeting him and seeing him do a clubnight/worship night.
