i.e. a recording of 50 minutes of a contineous DJ set, but people can still skip
through the tracks to the desired "song".  Do you need software like CD Architecht
or is there some other way?

This only one suggestion
If you were saving the mix as an mp3 file then you could do it in 'garageband' in podcast mode that would enable you to devide up the tracks. Would also mean that you would need to use a Mac. Wink

you should be able to do this in most cd burning software packages. Alternatively, split the files in an audio editor then burn then to a cd with 0 track spacing.

I probably do things the hard way, but they are effective.

After I have recorded my mixset into my audio software (I use Cool Edit Pro), I make sure I save it as a wav file for optimal quality. (You can convert it to an mp3 if you want after, I just always use wav for burning cd's.) Once the set is saved, I then begin the process of cutting it up into tracks. I highlight the area for each track and copy to new file and save each new file numerically as a wav file. (01.wav, 02.wav, 03.wav...etc) Make SURE the highlighted areas do not overlap or miss any portion of your mix or the cd when burned will not sound right. If your audio software allows you to put cue points in the mix that's great, because then you can just highlight between cue points and save those.

I need to stress this. DO NOT SAVE YOUR INDIVIDUAL TRACKS AS MP3! Even if you set your burner to 0 gaps, there is still a slightly noticable hesitation between tracks. For some reason, mp3 files will do that. They need to be wav files.

here is an example of my finished product ready to burn: http://media.jitabeat.com/audio/dj404/mixsets/aLife/CD/

Once you have highlighted and saved each section, you just load the files into your burning program, making sure they are numerically in order and the program is set to 0 gap between tracks. Burn your cd and wa-la!

Like I said, I probably do the hard way, but it works without fail.

Thanks guys, all I need to do now is get a drive that supports 0 second gap between tracks
(maybe its the CD-R type?)  Ive tried before and Nero wouldnt let me set the gap to 0.  Or maybe just use Roxio toast and a Superdrive!!! (my "new" G4 being setup next week...)

it's not your burner, it's the software.   use iTunes. i'm pretty sure it has a setting for 0 secs

My Roxio supports no spacing between tracks.  Also to cut up a mix I'll just import the wav into mixmeister or something like that...i'll even use my soundforge to do it sometimes.  Usually i do it in mixmeister cuz then i can layer other stuff on top of it during the blends ie, a voice over or a swoosh or something, with a comfortable ease.

I use CD Architect.  It is amazing and makes burning continous mix CD's a breeze.  It also lets you do final mastering at this stage.  Also for those of you who like drop in vocal samples in after the fact, it has a second stereo track for limited sequencing.
