mp3 question for the computer geeks

What is my computer thinking when I click on a mp3 link and it downloads the file as a mpeg? Everytime I download a mp3, it saves it as a mpeg and I have to convert it back to mp3. It really stinks.

What browser Both IE (latest version) and Firefox
What mp3 players do you have installed Winamp, iTunes, MusicMatch, etc...
Does it just save the file or try to open it first If left clicked it will try to open and play it in browser via Quicktime, so I have to right click
How are you saving the file Right click, save target as
What os XP

so right-click->save target as is saving it as somesong.mpeg? thats probably because the hosting ISP blocks mp3 transferrs so the website renames them...

Have you tried just renaming the files with .mp3 file extensions?

I think that's a setting in one of the players...likely Windows Media or Winamp...[scratches head]...although Windows media usually saves as wma. Still....go into the options or preferences of some of your players and find out which one is your 'default' and what the 'default' settings are.
I know that your mp3 or mpeg will have an icon that relates to the default player...winamp mp3 files look like little lightning bolts. Windows Media looks like a play button. That kinda thing should tell you what player is responsible for doing this.
That's my idea...and I'm stickin' with it.

I'm gonna have to agree with this... I've actually had this happen before. I'm pretty sure when I uninstalled QT it fixed the issue. If not then its one of your other 3rd party apps takin' over for some reason. It sucks but you may have to uninstall them 1 by 1 until it stops acting stupid... your only other alternative is this...

The problem is iTunes. You can't install iTunes without Quicktime for some reason. I've tried. It is attached with the download and when I tried to install iTunes without Quicktime, it would not let me finish the iTunes install. I even later uninstalled Quicktime and iTunes would not function properly.
I guess the next question is, how to I get my computer to forget that Quicktime is on here so things will run like I want? And before you give me the obvious answers, I have already set Winamp as my default media player. I have gone into Quicktime and deselected any options that would give Quicktime the upper hand. What else can I do?

I guess I don't understand what is happening... How would QuickTime mess up a download? You context-click the link, download the file... and use an app to read the file. QuickTime might assist that app playing the file, but how does it interfere with the downloading of the file?
iTunes uses QuickTime for encoding and playback, I believe, so that's why it's necessary to have it installed. If you're a Mac user, QuickTime is just a given, but I guess it's different for you other folk...
