New DM song is bashing John and the book of Revelations - sad  Sad

John the Revelator
Put him in a elevator
Take him up to the highest high
Take him up to the top where the mountains stop
Let him tell his book of lies

John the Revelator
He's a smooth operator
It's time we cut him down to size
Take him by the hand
And put him on the stand
Let us hear his alibis

By claiming God as his only rock
He's stealing a god from the Israelite
Stealing a god from a Muslim, too
There is only one god through and through
Seven lies, multiplied by seven, multiplied by seven again
Seven angels with seven trumpets
Send them home on the morning train
Well who's that shouting?
John the Revelator!
All he ever gives us is pain
Well who's that shouting?
John the Revelator!
He should bow his head in shame

Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye

Seven lies, multiplied by seven, multiplied by seven again
Seven angels with seven trumpets
Send them home on the morning train
Well who's that shouting?
John the Revelator!
All he ever gives us is pain
Well who's that shouting?
John the Revelator!
He should bow his head in shame

Bye-bye
Bye-bye
John the Revelator
Bye-bye
John the Revelator
Bye-bye
John the Revelator

sheesh... not exactly a little vague reference either huh? They put it all on the line.

When I saw the thread subject I thought maybe they had written a song with Christian overtones. Guess not.  Roll Eyes

And guess who is on the remix? Our friend Stryke.

That's from his website:

Murk's Remix of "John The Revelator" with Stryke as Editor/Engineer is out on Mute now!

really?!?!? Odd. I'd like to hear his remix before casting judgement though.

It's on his site too: http://www.stryke.net/discography.htm

I should call and find out about that.

OK... found a link to a sample of it on Depeche's site: http://www.repriserec.com/depechemode/audio/releases/mp3/jtr_murkmodemiamimix.mp3

From the "[Stryke as Editor]" comment on Strykes discog I would venture to guess that Stryke only help edit the remix and did not actually produce it. Murk Mode is probably friends with him as both are in Miami.

If I get a chance I'll call him tonight. I've been meaning to do that.

throwing out a possibility here.

what if this song isn't about "john the revelator" per se, but is an allegory about, say, pat robertson or jerry falwell (or slice of laodecia type people)??  the song song is actually based/spun off from an old blues/goespel song of the same name, btw.  i'm not saying i know martin gore's heart on the subject, just saying that none of us do.

i've said this many times, and i'll say it again.  it's a bono quote from a film at the rock hall of fame museum "the artists i am drawn to are either running away from God, or running towards Him - all the rest are just fluff."

from the same album, take these lyrics for a spin:

"the sinner inside"

If I could just hide
The sinner inside
And keep him denied
How sweet life would be
If I could be free
From the sinner in me

I'll never be a saint
That's not a picture that your memory paints
Not renowned for my patience
I'm not renowned for my restraint
But you're always around
You can always be found
To pick me up when I'm on the ground

If I could just hide
The sinner inside
And keep him denied
How sweet life would be
If I could be free
From the sinner in me

I'm still recovering
Still getting over all the suffering
More known for my anger
Than for any other thing
But you've always tried
To be by my side
And catch my fall when I start to slide

If I could just hide
The sinner inside
And keep him denied
How sweet life would be
If I could be free
From the sinner in me

I talked to Greg. He said he'd try to get on here a bit later and respond to it. Here's the SHORT version.

1) He only did some post-production work on it.
2) There are SEVERAL interviews out there where Martin (of DP) talks about how the song ISN'T blasting Christianity, but Bush. Greg said one interview was in Spin, but he wasn't sure.

Now... The song cheeses me off b/c it does the one thing I hate seeing artists do and that's get so artsy that everyone has to question or interpret what they have created. The reason why I can't stand that is b/c they ALMOST always get so wrapped up in their analogy, that the meaning itself becomes too obsure and everybody misses the intended meaning from the start.

ANYWAY... we're apparently making a big whoop out of nothing... as usual Wink

Actually... it fits both ways. The big clue is the lines about Jews and Muslims. Muslims weren't around when Revelations was written and (that) John came from a jewish background if I remember correctly.

Bush the Revelator
Put him in a elevator
Take him up to the highest high
Take him up to the top where the mountains stop
Let him tell his book of lies

Bush the Revelator
He's a smooth operator
It's time we cut him down to size
Take him by the hand
And put him on the stand
Let us hear his alibis

By claiming God as his only rock
He's stealing a god from the Israelite
Stealing a god from a Muslim, too
There is only one god through and through
Seven lies, multiplied by seven, multiplied by seven again
Seven angels with seven trumpets
Send them home on the morning train
Well who's that shouting?
Bush the Revelator!
All he ever gives us is pain
Well who's that shouting?
Bush the Revelator!
He should bow his head in shame

Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye

Seven lies, multiplied by seven, multiplied by seven again
Seven angels with seven trumpets
Send them home on the morning train
Well who's that shouting?
Bush the Revelator!
All he ever gives us is pain
Well who's that shouting?
Bush the Revelator!
He should bow his head in shame

Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bush the Revelator
Bye-bye
Bush the Revelator
Bye-bye
Bush the Revelator

I just found the music video though:

I think... you can buy it now.

I guess you are right, but why use John as an anology. Did John tell lies?

Bush is a Christian and says God told him to do all of this. Seems like it might be why to me.

Don't want to get into the "lie" part, but... [edited out a conservative rant ... for the sake of not breaking the rules here any more than I already have Tongue ]

Let's just leave it at this.

So... John "lied" about the second coming just like Bush "lied" about Iraq. Since neither has come to a close yet, I don't think we really know who "lied" do we. Wink

Gah... I'm gonna have to ban myself again aren't I or is this actually dance related? I can't tell anymore.
