Selling Equipment
«
on:
July 19, 2008, 11:56:33 AM »
Well I'll just be straight and to the point.
I'm trying to sell my equipment because I don't think that God is blessing my producing efforts, and I can't take my studio to graduate school with me. I DO think that it was a good thing for me to buy all that stuff this summer (I would have never been satisfied otherwise) but I think that it was meant to be short-lived. Overall I just notice that producing is taking away much more from me than it is giving (time, satisfaction, enjoyment, etc...).
Just pray that God will reassure to me that I'm doing the right thing ~ it really seems like I am.

So... you're quitting why? You sure that you're not just frustrated with having to learn how to use all the gear? What gear did you buy?

ENDURANCE! Just because you aren't banging out hit after hit within a few months of having gear doesn't mean God isn't blessing you. ANYTHING worth being blessed and happy about takes commitment and dedication. Without it, you will never be happy.

Maybe you're right, but I've burned so much time trying x, y, and z and I can never come up with anything I'm really all that proud of. I have poured so much time into producing that it has negatively affected some other areas of my life. When I try to listen to other music for inspiration it has the opposite effect
Last school year it was my instrument of procrastination. Maybe I do just see it in a negative light, but regardless of that something has to change, and I'm not willing to chance not getting into the school I want because of producing.
The "fleece" that I put out is that God will send a reasonable buyer if he really wants me to get rid of it.
That's one more thing... it's coming in clearer and clearer that God would have me do other things with my time. I can really say that I've "been there and done that".
My gear is easy to use stuff: Studio monitors, amplifier, audio interface, etc... so it's not that I'm frustrated with learning. Cubase is the most complicated part of my setup, but I've also had that for a while longer.
From now until next school year this is what I have going on:
- Studying for and taking the GRE (General and Physics Subject test)
- Research with the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS on board MRO)
- Research with the Phoenix Lander accelerometer data
- Applying to graduate schools
- Presenting my MCS research at AAS/DPS convention in NY in October
- Finishing my summer class
- Working on my classes during the school year (15/16 hours)
- Working in an interoperability project between NASA and the ESA.

Fair enough. If you really feel that God does not want you to do this, then I offer a slight rebuttal to something you said.

If God had no intention of you to do this for Him, the it was not a good thing for you to waste the time and energy and money to buy this stuff for a short-lived thing. It doesn't make any kind of sense at all. God does not waste our time. He has a plan and a purpose for everything He has us do. So basically this means that you did this outside of God's plan for your life if it isn't in His will to produce music. Especially since now you are so unhappy with the results thus far.
Look at me dude. I have been producing bad music since the early 1990's. I still haven't given up because it is a hobby for me. I am not looking to make a living off of producing. If I am unhappy with something I make (which I usually am LOL) I just walk away from it until I get another burst of inspiration and then I work more on it. Not saying this is what you should do, I am just making the point that just because you are unhappy with your results, it doesn't mean you should quit.
Either way, pray about it.

Good point. To be honest I'm not sure that it was God's will for me to get the stuff, I would just like to think that I'm somehow justified for making that decision.
Thanks, I will pray some more about it. I just can't see a purpose to all of this. Producing annoys me more than anything these days.

consider just putting it all away instead of selling it. that way you cant use it but if you want to get back, you dont have to spend the money again. ive done that for several things in the past.

yeah i agree with most of what was said already, but i just wanted to add that selling gear sucks if you ever might want to buy it again. used gear for sale usually barely brings any cash in, unless the gear itself is like rare or still sealed in boxes or something. if it's just regular old used production gear, its hard to get much money out of it.
but also, it doesn't really matter though if you aren't selling it with intention of making money. since you are selling it with the intention of just giving up producing then the money doesn't really matter i guess.

Plain and simple answer here, just walk away from it for awhile. If you have to pack the stuff away in storage so you don't have to see it till you get your head right, just do it.
I've been so tempted to do the same thing with djing, a lot actually. Thankfully I haven't done it (won't sell anything), I just walk away from it. When God wants me to use it I will, but until I'm ready and He's ready it's just something that often times frustrates me to no end. I'm not giving up on it though, not unless He specifically tells me to. Now, if this stuff was bought and producing started out of His will, then by all means do what you gotta do, but if HE put that desire in you, then just walk away for awhile, focus on your education, focus on HIM, things will work out when it's supposed to.
Don't lose focus on Him, that's the biggest mistake we all make...

I think I tell my wife at least once a week that I should sell all my kit and pay a chunk off the mortgage. It's just life getting frustrated with this stuff and you are probably you own worst critic. These guys are giving good advice by the way

Well... now that you mention it...
I'd sell the kit to pay off debt. That's it. BUT... I'd get a cheaper kit to learn on.
All you really need is abelton or flstudio. Everything else can pretty much go until you are ready to take things to the next level.
I worked for years on a SB Live Plat, FL Studio, and some free synths and samples. That's all ANYONE should have for their first year or two. I'd just say get Ableton LE rather than FL at this point though. Ableton gives you a few better options.

Over time I have learned that producing isn't for the faint of heart. Also being a good producer just means you overcame loads of days when you wanted to throw all your gear in the trash. Yeah it takes time, I can't tell you how many hours I have logged in the studio, I mean its literally thousands of hours, it doesn't come easy, but yeah it takes time and committment. Its not for everyone...
Your "fleece" is ridiculous. A buyer for gear? Its like asking God to confirm direction if you find apples at the grocery store this time? I wont be using a sale on ebay to confirm God's path for my life anytime soon.

Yes well said Matt
I know a friend who once was a great producer and used to inspire me but sold everything as his wife called the shots

haha Jamey? *sigh* I miss Jamey.
You know... He almost had me convinced to by a micro-modular. Then he discovered Reaktor and suckered me into one of the best purchases I've ever made. 1 synth = everything.

Ok well I'm not eBaying it, I just dropped word around my friends who produce and DJ, and those who might otherwise want a studio set up. So far nothing though, at all. My Dad said pretty much what you all said, he likes my equipment a lot.
I like how you said that producing isn't for the faint of heart ~ I second that. It seems like I feel guilty producing every time I do it because of the time lost (not like CS:S surfing is any better though).
Well I've actually been using FL and free samples/synths since early high school, but I didn't really decide to take it to "the next level" since last summer (after my sophomore year of college). Since about January though I've been using Logic and Cubase, so maybe it is a learning thing for me b/c Logic and Cubase are intrinsically complicated^n.
I just don't know what to do when producing annoys me more than it's worth, but over time I will work my
off in hope of getting to a place where I enjoy it again.
I must say that it is a bittersweet conclusion to keep my stuff.
I really covet Reaktor though. It's hard for me not to just put it on my credit card. I don't because I'm afraid it won't change the tides of me not liking to produce.
