Hi Everyone,

I'm playing Tomfest in Camas, WA on August 9th and I'm looking for a DJ to back me up live. The style of music is Electro-Soul and is LCD Soundsystem-ish but less punk and more soul. I can pay a small amount and cover gas costs. I know there's a few of you in the NW and especially in the Seattle area...anyone interested?

Grace and peace,

Ok... I'll ask the stupid question: What do you want this DJ to do exactly?

I think he wants the DJ to basically play his tracks in the background or do some live collaboration with a DJ/Live PA set up. I'd do it if he wants to fly me out a few days in advance and practice with me before the event.

Yep- pretty much. Play tracks and anything beyond that is gravy. Unfortunately, flying anyone out isn't in the cards in the near future at least Wink

And I understand the "not my style" bit. No worries.

Peace,
Paul

Is that the same Tomfest that used to be held here in Southern California but later migrated north and changed its name to something that started with a "P"?

I'm not sure about the festval's history but from the website it says "Welcome to the home of the one and only, all original, tom festival! 2008 will mark tom fest's 13th year as the northwest's forefront christian indie-music festival. each year we showcase well over 100 regional and national bands over 4 days on 4 stages"
I'm not sure Southern California would count as the "northwest".

I was able to get a DJ to work with me live- Theory Hazit (http://www.theoryhazit.com/) from Portland.

Thanks everyone,
Paul

TOMfest started up here & used to be held at Stevenson, WA.  i went to the first, third, fifth ones (i think '95, '97, & '99... might have gone to another one after that).   then i VJ'd the "rave night" at the last couple of them that were at Stevenson (i think '02 & '03).  those last couple of years Mikee & co. changed the name from "TOMfest" to "Portico."  some of the years they did have additional TOMfests in other locations, but it did start up here.
Xfest sprung up in the absence of TOMfest [they quit and/or went on hiatus for a year or two], and took place at the same location & time as the earlier TOMfests.
then i think in '06, TOMfest shifted its date & location [Stevenson on Labor Day wknd to Camas in early Aug.] & started back up again.
the Portlandians should know the story better tho'... tim?

Hi Rick,

Dude that is even more than I know.

From my own findings from talks with other people in the area. Mikee Bridges had a big following of people that met for local events and the Christian Rock scene here was pretty good. Mikee decided to get every one out to go camping at his parents farm out in the Hillsboro area and eventually it grew too big for that. That's when they started renting out the fairgrounds over in Stevenson. I guess it started off with a bang. Xfest has never been able to achieve that kind of success. Mikee already had the built in connections to make a festival successful. Xfest does not.

Continuing... A few years ago Mikee moved to Socal and that's when some people decided to take over the rent at the fairgrounds. The first year was a really small group and they called it the "Not Tom Fest". The second year and third they billed it as Xfest and had a huge lineup. A guy named Lloyd Epperly headed up the bookings for these two years and it was booked very well (at least the third year) unfortunalty it was poorly attended. After the disapointing attendance Lloyd left and I came in to help Jeanie with the Xfest festival. This year she had gotten a guy named Chad Leeson to help but he hasn't been quite what Jeanie was looking for.

Anyway back to Tomfest. It was on hiatus for a couple years (I think) and then showed back up in Camas. Apparently the church out there got Mikee to come back to Portland for the one weekend. I heard they give the land to him for free so it really cuts down his costs.

I moved to Portland during the third year of Xfest which was the first year of Tomfest in Camas.

Well that is my story. Next year I will probably attend Tomfest or do some shows as a "Creuk Radio" soundsystem.

Thanks. God Bless.

Aaron.
