When you are close to finishing a song, do you have a checklist that you go through to make sure everything is sounding right? something like:
1. How is the sound space of the instruments?
2. Is there anything too repetitive that the listener can easily grow tired of?
3. How does it sound on other sound systems?
4. ...

Your list is good there.
For me most of the focus is on sound quality, the arrangement of the track, and final mix. Everything happens in the mix, you can't have a great master if the mix is just OK. If the track is almost done I usually send it to some friends that will give me honest feedback on the music. A process like that can help you really grow in your productions. I generally make about 10 final mixes, and trying to continually add more automation and little things that can help bring the track to life, relistening, and working on other material in between.

I agree with both posts, it is good to listen if it is too repetitive and also work in another track while you finish your track will give you a clear vision of what are you doing and what can be fixed, erased or added.

I keep tweaking it until i want to listen to it over and over - then i know its done : )
Generally i just tweak breakdowns, volume levels of individual elements, and sometimes add extras if required. Then i play it out, and repeast the whole process!

by the time i listen to my song for the 900th time I get really bored of it.
What I will do is go a week without listening too it after I finish it. That way I can really get a good grasp on it.

When I'm working hard on developing what a certain instrument will sound like I'll try soloing it so that I don't get tired of the rest of the channels. I also try not to work on a song unless I have at least an hour to work on it, because I get tired of hearing the same song 20 times throughout the week when I work on it for 15 minutes each time meanwhile not making any progress. One thing that I've been forgetting to do is research. I get so focused on development that I rarely read tutorials, which in the past I have noticed help to provide fresh ideas. I was just recommended
this website
, maybe it will help. There's also the future producers website, which is what I was a part of before tasty.

I can do most of the work in one sit down, at least all the main ideas and a general layout, but rarely finish anything that quickly. Perhaps I need a cape too.

haha, sorry thats more what i mean, i get the general track finished then tweak for a week lol.
i'm wayyyyyy more productive with my music if i do it that way as apposed to an hour here, and hour there... and when you're working on multiple tracks and ideas in the same time period it takes me almost an hour to remember where i left off if i don't touch it for a week or two at a time. i'm also more productive if i focus on finishing as apposed to just generating ideas, finishing, even if crappy is better than a 30s loop that you think sounds great but you have no idea how you're going to lay it out.

I think I'll try that, because I've lost way too many songs to time.

When I do short writing sessions to avoid losing songs I record a mixdown of where the track is and put it in a folder "ZZideas" When I complete a track or use it for somethign else I delete thefiles fron "ZZideas" So if I'm looking for something to work on I can just listen to all the clips in that track and pick it up with out having to loads thousands of project files to see what it was. The ZZ just means this folder is always at the bottom of the list so it is easy to find when rendering a mix
