For EDM, we are quickly closing in on that 15-20 year cycle that seems to take place in the music industry where genres make a comeback.  The 90's were hot for dance music.  Raves were frequent (and still legal) and MTV was playing Deepsky.  The hype for electronic music died and for the past decade it's been all but buried and forgotten by the majority the mainstream.  I understand there is still the underground (the very deep underground...).  i understand car commercials still uses dance tracks in there commercials.  and i understand EDM is bigger in European countries.

What i'm talking about is a return to mainstream culture in the US.  Does anyone foresee a comeback?  I'm not talking about wishful thinking or whats been happening in tight circles of EDM-loving buddies.  Are there definitive signs that something may be happening to bring rave/dj culture back?

And my intentions are not to sound pessimistic...i am really curious as to what's happening, because in Jacksonville, for now, its dead.

much love and respect to all your future unbiased responses,

I was going to say, "I can feel it, deep in my bones.... it's coming back."

But what I really think to be true, is that it's coming back in some shapes and forms already, but perhaps different to how it was last time. You've got artists like Ratatat, and Ladytron, beginning to make their names well known, and they're heavily influenced by electronic music.

Will we see a return to big room techno, trance, and other dance? I'm not sure.

Has anyone noticed that Ratatat - Wildcat sounds oddly similar to Gareth Emery - Outrageous?

EDM - I Hope it's coming back as I am ready to produce this time rather than just play it.

The US is always ripe for dance music, one of the strong points here is its musical history.  So many dance shows on TV now, etc etc.  I think for EDM to break open here more, it has to loose its RAVE Dogma somehow, drug history etc, new ideas, some new venues.  I personally think its growing again, but maybe I am the last guy on the dance floor with the disco ball still spinning.

Ratatat! I love these guys. Cool

For EDM to make a splash, America is going to have to shed its pop music visage. Its a shame that most of the US interest is taken hook line and sinker by whatever gets cranked out of a record company's pop-star machine. Now, i'm not saying that these people don't have talent, i just really feel like some record companies are just wearing out the business model. There's no room for a niche anymore, no one cares unless its top 10. I think that eventually its going to reach a point of saturation. People are genuinely just going to get sick of it and become more drawn to genres that break the mold.

It truly saddens me when the image of an artist is 1000X more appealing to an audience than who wrote or produced the song that they know every word to!  Cry

There have been like 5 or 6 hit songs on the radio that have a 4 on the floor beat.  Artist's like Timbaland, Rihanna, Chris Brown, etc.  My wife says part of it might be due to all of the Dance Contest shows.  One of them actually spoke of some dance style that got its roots from House music.  She didn't recognize the name of the style though.  Nor could she remember it when I asked her. Sad  But I don't know what this means for EDM either.  I do know that EDM needs to shake the bad elements of the Rave scene.  Who knows.

There are two flavors of music, good and bad.  However, the musical pallete's of various people are infinite.
