I am faced with some tough decisions right now and I need your prayers. Please read the whole thing if you're going to read this.

Details:
I'm coming up on my last year of undergrad college. I want to try really hard to get into a good college for graduate school (namely, Cornell). To get in I need to have an awesome GRE score (basically the SATs for grad school). They DO charge tuition for grad students, at about $30k per year times 7 years (average time to get PhD) is more than $200,000. I obviously cannot afford this. But If God wants me to go to school somewhere like this then he'll provide a way.

So my time from here on out is split between a few things: Studying for the GRE exams, School (that too lol), a research project with the Phoenix lander, alongside a position I will have here at the Atmospheres PDS node.

Here's where things get weird:
God laid it on my heart to stop the whole electronic music stuff to make room for him in my life. I've been doing that for like a week, and it has been a good decision. However, I really wonder what God has in mind in all of this, after all he could have laid all of this on my heart a few years back ...before I put thousands of dollars into it. But that's beside the point, I'm not sure that's what he's saying at all.

JUST TODAY I got an e-mail from my NASA program coordinator and she was wondering if I'm interested in applying to be part of a team to create a multimedia presentation of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. I told her that I produce electronic music on the side a while back, and now she's offering this opportunity to use my producing for a NASA presentation!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean get out of town, this is surreal!!!

This is really important because I have always wanted to do something like this. But I may not have enough time. If I choose to do this, I may not be able to study as much for the GRE and I may not get into a good grad program. I'm not sure what God wants me to do smiley25. I have too many huge decisions, all focusing their attention on RIGHT NOW! I need guidance from God like real soon.

First and foremost, I'd like to encourage you to seek God's voice in whatever way you usually hear him. Some hear the still small voice, some see flashing neon lights, some receive God's guidance through the words of others, I personally feel God in "the peace". I have never had a strong tangible sense of God telling me to do something, rather I feel at peace with a certain decision (when I let myself calm down), and that's consistently the way God directs me.

So first and foremost, "listen" for the way he directs you. Then don't be afraid to follow it. Brief story: Shortly before I got married, I was second guessing a lot of things. I got all heady about getting married, and demanded some sort of sign from God. I said "peace isn't enough, this is marriage!" and I begged and begged for some kind of big booming voice to direct me. What I got instead was at least 2 different people praying with me at different times saying "I really feel like God's guiding you through his peace. Follow the peace in your heart." So... I've learned my lesson.

As for practical advice, I think you really need to search for God's heart in this. The opportunity at NASA sounds awesome, but if God's put it on your heart to focus on your relationship with Him (at the expense of music), then the outcome of that will be immeasurably better than any worldly job offer. I generally don't believe God "tests us" in the way many people say (I'm going through tough times, why is God testing me?) but I do believe God wants to see your obedience.

Regarding getting into the Grad program. Don't forget God can make a way in any situation. Don't use that as an excuse to slack off, but don't forget that God has infinite resources and desires to see his children succeed and live out their dreams.

And, if you don't get into the Grad program but opportunities continue to open at NASA, who needs the grad program? I don't know if your industry is like mine, but I think much of the North American work force has shifted over the last couple of years to looking at experience rather than education.

Is all this advise conflicting and contradictory? Sure. Basically, don't forget that God can count you into and out of any situation. Don't rely on your own strength Smiley And first and foremost, spend time with him, and "listen", expecting to "hear" something.

What you say seems to be contradictory, but not at the heart of it. I think I know what you're getting at.

I appreciate it, I think God is speaking through you. We'll just have to see how it turns out.

#1 The GRE is offered on a regular schedule. Jobs for NASA aren't. Taking a few extra months to study and start saving money for your degree is wise. If NASA is paying you, this money could go toward that.

#2 What degree are you trying to get that will cost over $200,000 and can you really make enough to pay that back fairly quickly once you are out? Is that field in that much demand?

#3 Did God say quit using your talent or did God say make time for Him? There's a huge difference and it doesn't always have to be on or the other. I'm a huge supporter of doing what God wants, but if it's a time issue, rearrange your schedule to make room for God. If it's that music is your god rather than God, you gotta quit it for now.

Update: I'm not going to do it. God is leading me elsewhere and his will is becoming more and more clear to me. I don't even have time to do it. I hope that someone who is a good producer that needs the money and has favor with God will take this opportunity for me. It really is incredible.

I posted it under djtrailer's "god give me strength post". Look it up. I really hope that God will bless someone greatly through it.

Thanks for all your prayers. I truly believe I am on the right track now.

With the sorts of people that God has put into my life I'm really not worried about finding a job at NASA. He's given me a lot of favor with some people in high places at NASA.

I give God the glory for all of this.

Often times God will try telling me things like "make more time for me" etc... but after a while he starts to get real practical and starts saying stuff like "stop this and do that" then I realize how hard of listening I am.
