Regarding USB, something be aware of. If you're using a powered hub...

Power you gear, not your hub. This way you KNOW that your gear is getting EXACTLY what it needs.

The onboard sound card then? So the fix may in fact be an external audio device, rather than an external drive.

The simplest solution is to buy the sound card first. See how it works. Then buy an external drive or other gear as needed. There's not need to call Apple. You already know you want an external sound card.

Yeah... you're right.

I was JUST about to fire up the midiman and get that working, when the tornado storm came! I'm in the basement AT THIS VERY MINUTE.

Two problems solved.

The midiman wasn't working because it doesn't come standard with drivers that work for Leopard. You have to download them from M-Audio's site. Problem solved. Now I've got both keyboards talking to the computer sans problem.

Second problem? This is straight from Ableton support:

"Live 5.0.3 is not compatible with Intelmacs and therefore run in Rosetta
emulation. This means absolutely bad performance, as the old PPC
processors get emulated by software. You need at least Live 5.2.2 in
order to work on your machine. The current Version is Live 7.0.7."

So, answer? I'll be upgrading this week...
