(AN ABSTRACT RANT OF CURRENT FEELINGS/VISION TO WROCK YOU TO INTO ACTION)

anyone?  I guess a new generational shift is happening.  Like the Zeo party thing which I missed   Cry
lots of stuff happening in Toronto in bite size pieces across town, there is not a lot o unity though (ie different churches and denominations collaborating).

WARNING: does it have to be involving dance/rave culture or whatever makes us cool at a certain time in pop-culture, does God have to work the way we want?

no, but he does like to use the gifts and talents we have... so if its DJing amen, if its computer music AMEN,  if its Ballet then AMEN, if its Pastoring, evangelism and any other gift of the Spirit, I say bring it!

However - back to creating local "Groove" fellowship (I just saw the movie, very ironic) - the need for a support group in this area is overwhelming, as I still get the feeling this whole DJ/Dance thing is still extremely new and alien to most Christians, so I end up feeling like an alien myself.  Its very isolating, people just dont understand why I have a room full of knobs and lights yet no car to drive!!  I know a handfull of non-Tastyfreshers in the same boat.  Some are into the music side of things, others a part of this new "prophetic-worship- improv-musicianship 24hourprayer type thing" www.24-7prayer.com etc..  I just "spun" at the Missionfest prayer room, and at a SalvationArmy/614 24-7 prayer event and it was so non-rave, yet so awesome.  The people organizing those events dont know much about DJ/Dance culture, but they saw it was one of the many ways God works and really want more of this sort of thing, but dont know many Christians in their walk of life who are into it.  Also there are so many ways urban music (rap dancehall reggae to drumbass, breaks, trance, Bollywood techno?) can also hook up all the different ethnic communities in Toronto etc...  so this would be a great opportunity to go beyong our typical culture setting and find other people who feel they are alone in their culture/denomination/ethnic group (Christian reggea artists, ethnic/electronic fusion artists or other musicians in Torontos sometimes segregated ethnic cultures that don't feel they have a venue/voice).

A FEW TIPS RE: STARTING GROOVE FELLOWSHIP IN TORONTO

COMMUNICATION:
Tastfresh (initially) may not be the best option for getting the word out.  I find going out and meeting people, paper exchange of phone numbers/email a better way to start.  i.e we start with a just a few people, and then our networks/email lists collide and WOW, LOTS OF PEOPLE!! And,
believe it or not, I know people into the electronic music scene who dont use the Internet!!
We may even want to keep it small at first

APETHY IS THE ENEMY:
I notice that in an urban environment no one has the time for eachother, everyone is too busy with their own fun, thier own "lives", pursuits of artistic fame/recognition and the mustbuyhouseandgetcarandbuybigscreentv rat mill to really care about anything other than themselves.
And us Canadians and our apethy!!

START SMALL:
As much as I would like to hold a super conference or a Laserlight RAVE, Im thinking Second Cup...

SO WHO WANTS TO GO TO SECOND CUP??  Tastyfreshers?  Revurb, Jonathan Puddle, Jordan Teschke, Bueller...?? (Kneesha do you live in Toronto?) Lets talk.

Yours truly,

Isolated in Toronto,

My roots go back a ways further than DM4C... Wink

I have fond memories of Found Ontario meetings held at the 'sketch corner' Starbucks at Queen and John way way back in the day..some interesting things came out of those get-togethers.

Have things changed all that much in the seven-odd years since those early meet-ups?  Yes and no I suppose...many of us were in a similar situation - Christians interested in a culture that was being ignored by the church as a potential mission field.  Our group in its early days functioned as much as a support group for like-minded Christians in the scene as it was a ministy to the lost...

Groups like this work best when the members support each other's initiatives whole-heartedly and if enough common ground can be found to embark on group projects, then so much the better.

Good word Jeremy.

Toronto is such a strange place. This is the only city this big that I've lived in, so I don't know if other large cities are the same way. But you could feel like you were the only person living here sometimes. People can be so antisocial, and so inward. The ratrace you mentioned is pretty accurate. I'm out in the burbs, so it's not as bad, but each time I go downtown I always notice how closed some people are.

So, it's gonna start simply, and with communication, like you said. I'm up for some Timmies, or a Second Cup. Please no Starbucks, their coffee has an aftertaste. Wink

Shagz might be interested in this stuff as well.

Something for the Toronto crew:

DJ Tiesto is playing a 6-hour set at The Docks this Thursday the 30th. $50 at the door. I'm hoping to go.

Edit: Doors open at 10. I'll be going with a few folks. I might wear a superman cape.

I recommend
Manny Buono (DJ Hope)
Gino Locantore (DJ G)
from the original Life Zone club at Queensway Cathedral in Toronto.  as far as I know both these guys occasionally still DJ out and I know Manny still wants to see something happen.  also Todd Percival is probably Djing in Toronto, he used to spin at Unified Soul.  www.DM4C.com is still active with well over 100 DJs and dance music people mainly within a days drive of Toronto I believe.  if you start up an initiative and pass out flyers at Christian events,or just start talking to people asking around, you are bound to find tons of people interested in helping out and being involved.

bottom line is, if you are going to do anything at all, do it for God, its a lot of hard work to get anything happening but if you start a buzz, its like lighting a match and its bound to catch fire, and above all pray pray pray and let God use you any way He sees fit.  there are no rock stars in serving Christ, ministry is giving your all expecting nothing in return, and loving other people no matter what.  God opposes the proud and lifts up the humble, and the party is in the middle of a battlefield so be careful who you bring along.

if you pray and trust God, he can use you, so dont be afraid to get to work, or find some way to learn the skills you need.  I started out helping Life Zone move chairs and creating flyers, and the whole SBz and DM4C came out of promotional efforts for what I saw to be a necessary ministry.

Jeremy, I know Im tough to get ahold of right now.  But if you email me I will get back to you, feel free to use DM4C as a resource, its set up for people to post directly to all the other members because I didnt have time to connect people so its pretty much DIY.  if you get in touch with me personally I have a couple more resources and tips for you.

peace,
Shana

what Id like to see is, everyone who can play, get out and start promoting yourself as an independent artist.  go out and talk to people, get gigs, and start promoting them.

then when you secure a gig or a few, call up the other artists and support each other.  play each others gigs.  promote each others events.

theres lots of how to books at www.musicbookplus.com or chapters.ca or Amazon.com to help you get started and motivated

bottom line is, if everyone gets out playing, stuff is getting done, and theres no reason why you cant play the same venues as any other artist, even the crappy ones, even when you have to drive two hours and get lost in the rain, even when no one is paying you, even when you keep playing the same crappy gig down the street and hardly anyone shows up, if you keep at it, thats where everyone else got started, or even if its just a part time thing stuff is getting done

then all the artists get together and pool your resources and support each other, youre not competing with each other, theres strength in numbers, just go for it, its a team sport like soccer, get in and have fun

and if you want to learn more industry skills start responding to Now magazine ads to work for free or $10 an hour or whatever for people who know a bit more than you do, or offer to work for free for anyone doing what you want to learn or if it will help you network

show up anywhere where other Christian artists hang out, heres one www.coffeehouse.ca, their main venue is on Danforth Ave Toronto.  do a search and get networking with other Christian artists.

if youre willing to serve soon you will have a full throttle ministry, if youre willing to play any venue not just rave parties.

and if you want to promote your own raves, thats another kettle of fish, you might not have any time to perform, or if you set up a regular gig for yourself you may be able to book other artists in (even a youth group or coffeehouse or bar that doesnt currently have music), or just get playing the same circuits or venues other artists play (ask around and get networking)

if youre willing theres a way

as far as getting the word out, you have to build an audience whether youre an artist or promoter, its the same thing really... StreetBeatz pooled our resources and we promoted everyones parties not just our own in Toronto.  we became the source for Christian underground events in Ontario for awhile, running an online magazine with photos.  we just wanted to get the word out and that was our promotional vehicle.  DM4C came about when we started swapping DJs with other parties and had to stay in touch with a lot of people who were a part of what became a movement.  we saw a need, and filled it, and it exploded... Habakkuk 1:5, and the rest is history...

resources are everywhere if you look for them.  but its a lot of hard work to get anything off the ground.  the best way to get something happening is if everyone is working and you dont necessarily need to be working on the same thing.  just help each other out.  work in your own gifts, commit them to God to use you how He sees fit

most of our meetings were really based on praying together and coming up with ideas, and we carried out the ideas after the fact on our own.  really coming together to support each other and go out and get to work is the essence of church, and there are lots of artist friendly churches in Toronto...

just wanted to throw some ideas out there to get people thinking forward... if everyone gets out playing, there is a scene, connect the dots and support each other, even if what other people are doing isnt exactly your thing, chances are your audience will like it, and dont expect yourself to be what youre not, youre not Tiesto, you dont have to be, just be what you be and do what you do.

if you work in your gifts, or in your availability find a need and fill it (even learning new skills, if you help out others chances are they will help out you), like DJing for a church youth group, just serve... and if when you ever do get rich and famous keep the youth group gig anyways Wink  but the essence of the underground is based on people who work long hours for the love of music, money comes and goes if you ever see any of it at all.  people come and go.  people are still making music for the love of music.  if what you do is for the love of people it will show and it will be an extension of your prayer life like anything else you do.

if you make a list of what youre good at, and what youd like to see happen (like all the questions you write down when you start a business), you might come up with some ideas you hadnt thought of.  there might be an easier way to go about things.

always find a way to give back, goodwill spreads and it will come back to you.  remember the whole worldwide industry is based on relationships.  people who screw others over dont get invited back.

k thats just some random general thoughts and hope people find some worthwhile ideas in all of that to help get you thinking in the right directions... remember you dont have to do anything thats been done and you dont have to be like anyone else, become a leader, people follow leaders and entertainment and everything else is personality-based.  have a product or service that serves people (your cool music).

Look at the nations and watch and be utterly amazed.  For I will do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.  Habakkuk 1:5

peace and love

just curious if anyone knows what/where Mike Emmons is up to these days... last I heard he wanted to move to England to become a sound engineer... did that work out?  I know at least one other DJ into the detroit techno sound (from London, but now in Brighton I believe) and was thinking perhaps I should get them in touch... doesnt seem to be a lot of technoheadz in England from what the other DJ/producer was telling me... anyone know where he is / what he's up to?
