The dialog / screenplay was horrid and awkward.  The movie had no rhythm or flow, it was chunked up way too much.  I felt it was a bit more adult oriented than the last one but then they had to throw that shitty vocal track at the end of the movie and have that "unneeded love tension"  between Susan and Caspian, what a bunch of bull that was.  Please try to sell me something a bit more believable, stick the story and keep it simple.

I burst out laughing so many times watching this movie, and the funny thing is its the Narnia story i remember the least and it took everything I could muster not to mock that movie up and down while I was in the theater.   In fact there were a few times when I knew something cheesy was about to happen and I buried my face in my hands in disgust.

1/2 a star from me.  I won't recommend it to anyone and that stupid director/screenwriter should quit and do something else because he is completely ruining the stories.

Who knows, maybe by the time the Silver Chair comes around Puddleglum will be a giant bear that awkwardly mumbles "Aslan" in a drunken voice at inopportune times, but hey this is Disney, their track record right now is crap.

ha, nice.  another unneeded, potentially mockable moment was near the end when the mouse was asking for his tail back.  it was at this moment that i turned to my friend and whispered, "first candidate for worst movie '08."

we had a few chuckles.

The tail thing... that was in the book and was what my pastor's wife went to see the movie for (among other things). My beef with that part was the timing of the scene, not the scene itself. It's like the director said "Oh... we only have 3 minutes of film left and 20 pages of book!"

yeah.  timing, besides dialog, is its biggest failure.  i wouldn't have minded the scene if it was at a better time and written a bit better.

See, I was a bit biased in that (shame) I've never read the book. So it was all new story to me.

My one real critique is sort of in line with you Joel, in that they should have bit the bullet and made it PG-13. The story was obviously intended to be very violent - you've got mice slicing people's necks open and guys getting beheaded. So basically you have PG-13 content with a PG rating because the cameras pan real quick so you don't SEE the blood spurting out of sliced-open carotid arteries, or the entrails spurting forth from a severed neck.

I've now heard stories of parents being upset because their 10 year old girls were really really scared and frightened by all of the violence, but because it was only PG, they took their kids to see it anyway.

What I'm saying is, they ought to have completely watered down the violence and left it PG, or made it gory and taken the PG-13.

crazy thing is Repicheep is one of my favorites from that book and Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  They really watered down how noble a character he really was.

Well, C.S. Lewis did write the books for children.

So did Tolkien.

And they were both friends  Smiley

While they were both written for children, there are some major differences though.

Not only were the Narnia books written for children, but they actually have children in them!

Also Narnia was written for children, but also had a planned spiritual teaching behind it.

LOTR for the most part was just pure entertainment.  (Yes, it does have deep things in it, but he didn't have the same goals for it that C.S. Lewis did for Narnia.)

The tone of both series is completely different from each other too.

LOTR is more of an older childrens book, I would think.  Definitely darker and more serious.

My favorite things I took away from the movie were all spiritual content.

Peter (and the other kids, except for Lucy) had a hard time believing Aslan (Jesus) was still around, and was the answer to their problems.

Peter says something like, "I just wish there was some proof he was still here, some sign" and Lucy says:

"Maybe it's not him who should be proving anything to us, maybe WE should be proving ourselves to Him."

I also liked how Peter kept trying to do things in his own power, on his own without Aslan's (Jesus') help.

Then as it all comes crashing down he realizes not only did it hurt him, but his choices also hurt others too, as so many of the Narnia creatures die in a useless battle.

I liked how even though Lucy was the one who still believed in Aslan, and saw him, she was not perfect either:

Something like:  "Why did you not come to me?"

"I knew it was you, but no one else would believe me and I was too scared to come on my own."

After they failed in their own power, they were also tempted to turn to the witch (Satan).

Yeah, they did a good job presenting the spiritual parts of the film. They could have done it better though. It also didn't make up for the fact that the movie was 80% battle.

I honestly left thinking they should just make and Aslan movie and then slapped myself silly for saying such a thing Wink

well from what ive been reading... you have all lost your minds.  Cheesy the movie was great! why is everyone on this forum becoming so jaded? really?

it makes me wanna  hurt

yes it was a little disney i will give you that... but ive read all of the books more then once and they kept it in line with the book very well. about 95%. i was very impressed with that. one thing that should be pointed out is that this book was always the "slower" or "less a popular" book in the series as it is actually leading up to the dawntreader which will be much better. i remember when the BBC made the first live action movies of these books they made price caspian and the dawn treader back to back and they played one right after another...

i dont think you should be able to give this a negitive review unless you have read the book at least once.

anyway this was well done. the first was better but this certainly filled the shoes of the second book in my opinion.  Lips Sealed

I agree that the movie was not as good as the LOTR movies, didn't flow well, and was lacking in some areas.

I still enjoyed it and thought it was a good movie though, just not a great one.

Sure it's not LOTR quality, but it still beats the crap out of movies like Eragon.  laugh

Before this, all we had were those guys in the awful animal suit costumes, now we have Narnia movies that are much cooler looking, even of they aren't perfect yet.

Don't agree, it should be able to stand alone as a movie, but it doesn't.  It is a terribly done movie as movies go.  There no excuse for it.  And don't come back at me about reading them, I've not only read them all many times but I've had them read to me many times.  I'm not complaining about accuracy either so that argument doesn't stand.

Well... one thing is for sure. No matter how bad Narnia was, it shines like perfection up against Speed Racer.

lol... a good friend whose opinion on movies I seriously respect loved Speed Racer. He said it was some of the best escapism wild-ride cinema he'd seen in years.
