I'll say this. Speed Racer is eye-candy. But... come on... paying tribute to the original series? Don't think so.

i dont think you should be able to give this a negitive review unless you have read the book at least once.

Don't agree, it should be able to stand alone as a movie, but it doesn't.  It is a terribly done movie as movies go.  There no excuse for it.  And don't come back at me about reading them, I've not only read them all many times but I've had them read to me many times.  I'm not complaining about accuracy either so that argument doesn't stand.

I can't comment myself.

lol... a good friend whose opinion on movies I seriously respect loved Speed Racer. He said it was some of the best escapism wild-ride cinema he'd seen in years.

apparently the world thinks otherwise...

Yeah, I'm aware of that. But the world can think what they will Smiley I still haven't seen it, so I have no idea. I'll rent it or watch it in Finnish cinemas a year from now... Roll Eyes

even the eye candy didnt save this movie. at times i didnt know who was winning or what was happening during the races. some scenes seemed to just drag on and on. i thought this was geared towards kids. the only thing that caught my daughters attention were the races and even then she couldnt make out what was going on. the movie was waaay too long.

what¿?

Speed Racer:

You need to know going in that it's got plenty of cheese, and a lot of the fighting and action are very campy.

Here's a good Spritle clip to give you an idea:  http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808406004/video/7633142/

It's more video game than Anime to me, and reminds me of Tron that way (but it's not that good.)

It does have some good things in it though, as one of the main themes is art vs commerce.

Do you do what you do because you love it, or do what you do to make money?

Once money enters the equation, can it still be art?

That theme was probably my favorite thing about the movie.

Not being able to tell what was happening in the races, or who was winning...NOT my favorite thing.

If you're looking for a family movie where good triumphs over evil, this is "ok."
