Hey guys,

I'm in the market to buy some studio monitors... I've been looking around and I don't want anything too small but I dont want anything too big either.

My budget is around $150.
I want something that I can mix/master on... so a pretty flat sound but CLEAR.
I will add a sub on later so it doesn't have to rumble.
The m-audio bx8's are too big.

What do you guys use?  I was either thinking of going with m-audio, editrol or behringer.  Do you know of any other brands that have some decent affordable models?

I think your fooling yourself personally.  Your monitoring chain is arguably the most important part of your set up.  $150 is just too little to really get anywhere IMO.  I'd save your money and buy something better, if you are really serious about staying with production.  I would think $500 would be a minimum just to pick up something that is middle of the road.  Perhaps if you are mentioning mixing and mastering on a pair of $150 speakers you are just starting out, but all I am saying is get the best you can afford.  My headphones cost more than that?

M-Audio wise, BX8s are good for starters.  You can get the first versions for cheap on ebay, fact, I think they're better the newer ones.

i recommend KRK RP5 but they can be expensive

I used them to do mixes with and the bass and treble was amazing. They can really pound. Also i did a live radio set for a station here in Kansas City and they had big ones in the studio and it was amazing as well. I cant really think of any cons besides the price. But sound quality is top notch

You're not the first one to speak good about KRK speakers to me... so maybe I should try a pair out.

Alright so I now own the KRK R5's.... so far they're well built... I don't really have a large space so getting big ones really wasn't a good idea for me.

They're a little bass heavy but I don't mind it that much... kind of nice balance between recording and mixing.  I like a little more bass when I'm playing keys recording a song but its still not enough to really throw the mix off.
Either way... if you get used to them and use other peoples music as a reference for how strong the bass should be (DJ QuickSilver, Paul Oakenfold ect..) then you should hear the difference. 

I'll be able to set them up with a little bit better placement next month when I get my new place.

Without a sub.. they're disappointing but if you add a nice sub they really do shine.

In the $200 to $300 dollar range they are one of the top monitors I've heard.
I really haven't adjusted to them as I just got them but currently I like and dislike them.
The parts I dislike would be corrected by either a more expensive pair or a decent sub added to the mix.

After writing all of this.. I'm glad I got these.  Didn't break the bank and they sound good.
