It's definitely one of the most underrated Anime's out there. It's certainly my favorite one.

There's actually a great resemblance between The Big O series characters and DC's Batman characters. The main reason for this can be attributed to the fact that they actually share the same production studio.

To sum it all up, if you like Film-Noir, Batman, Blade Runner, Metropolis, Godzilla, LOST or any one of these then you should like The Big O. It shares similar themes/devices with the first five mentioned and is wrapped in an existential-plot similar to LOST.

It was definitely a cliff-hanger ending to Season 2, but that's pretty much because Adult Swim prematurely canceled it; the creative staff were doing there best to wrap-up most of it as soon as the cancellation was announced. From what I heard the creators had originally intended the series to last for three (possibly even four) seasons.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the second season was actually funded in America by a very young Adult Swim.
It's a very remarkable story, in my opinion at least. What had happened was that while the first season was not doing well in it's native Japan, it was doing very good here in America--in either case, presumably because of it being much more "western" than other Animes. After the first season had finished playing on Cartoon Network's Toonami, the decision was made for them to co-produce a second season of Big O, to be made and first shown in Japan and then be played on CN's new offshoot Adult Swim.
As far as I know, this is the first (possible the only) time an Anime that originated in Japan has been funded by an American company.

But sadly, Adult Swim later had no desire to continue the series--it's much cheaper to fund cheaply animated and cheaply written "comedy" shows then to pay an out-of-country studio. And to make matters worse, they've have been very mean to the fans, even to the point of deleting any forum thread that request the return of Big O, and teasing the public with conflicting messages of whether or not they'll continue the series.
