saw something about all this on fandango this morning. Apparently, each of the avengers gets their own flick B4 the avengers movie. In other words, they avoid the x-men constant origins movies.

That would be the best way to do it in my opinion, at least. Most people who don't read comic books (at best) only now such characters by name. Just about everyone knows who Superman, Batman, The Hulk are because they've had exposure in other mediums such as Television and Film. Only recently is Graphic Literature becoming more mainstream.

In some cases it's a better adjective because "Comic" indicates comedy where not all "Comic Books" are funny pages.
As far as I know, America is the only country that has this problem with generalizing in the Sequential Arts. Graphical storytelling has a greater mainstream acceptance in other countries; eg. Japan's Manga and France & Belgium's Bande Dessinée (literally
drawn strip
).
