yeah, if your head gasket is broke and head is crack, if should of been caught, but since the tire guy looked at it, I would do what Dave mentioned. They should make it right at a discount.
well, the gasket wouldn't break until you ran out of coolant. UNLESS it was leaking when you took it in. But.. I DOUBT you could have made it to the shop if that was the case.

Full story so there is no more confusion.
It was bone dry. It over heated on the side of the road, 20 miles outside of Topeka. We called AAA to come and tow us to the nearest gas station to fill it up with coolant. Once we filled it up and stared the truck up, THAT's when we noticed it was hemorrhaging coolant out of the top hose. The tow truck then took us all the way into Topeka to the shop where they changed the top hose. Then is when we drove it off and it over heated again, prompting us to go back and then is when we discovered the lower hose was leaking as well. I left it with them overnight and the next day is when they told me it had the busted head gasket and possible cracked head.
I am not going to let them fix it because a few people we have talked to believe they head gasket may be something they have added on to get more money. We are going to have it towed to a shop that a good friend of ours is very familiar with. This shop is apparently very honest and affordable. Our friend has been taking his vehicles there for years and has a good relationship with them. They will give the truck a complete lookover to figure out exactly what is wrong with it.
We will do this Saturday.

OK... makes a bit more sense. If it was bone dry BEFORE you pulled over, it could have blown back then. You never know. When the head gasket goes though, it SHOULD go fast. It's under a lot of pressure so your temp should have skyrocketed almost immediately after that.
When dealing with such a high bill, always get a second opinion.

Praise God, the money to cover the repairs has been provided. In exchange, I have been sentenced to go to a financial peace seminar this summer at my church. LOL God is so awesome.

Telling ya man, move to a city where you can use bicycles/public transport. It's a serious load off. We've saving hundreds every month by living somewhere we can cycle everywhere*... obviously not everyone has this option, but it's incredible.
*That's saving hundreds compared to what we used to spend in Toronto, not actually putting hundreds into savings... but we'll be there soon.

I had the same dilemma with a car I used to have. BIG Headache!!!
I had a leak similar to yours where the hose had too much pressure on it and expanded in one place just enough to create a tear. When I took it to get checked out they said that in addition to the hose I needed a new head gasket. I toiled over expensive repairs but luckily my transmission died before I was convinced to forked over any cash. Total Loss..
But thank God I didn't act any sooner. It would have been $ down the drain.
It always seems to happen at the worst times. I feel your pain..

Totally!
I'm jealous. I used to bike everywhere when I was in school.

It's funny. Here in Atl. If I lived where I could bike into work, my housing costs (mortgage and property tax) would increase beyond what my fuel savings would be.

So TRUE!
Moving closer helped me tremendously though. I used to commute 50 miles both diving and public trans in the same trip. (MARTA sux).
What's it like in Topeka?

wow, thanks for the encouraging words. You are a real picker upper. Nothing but good news from this post.
But seriously, the LAST thing I need is for this truck to have the transmission die or anything else to get worse. It would not be "luckily" for me at all. It would be a catastrophe and a disaster. The worst possible situation at all is what you described.

referring to what? Housing costs? If so, housing is not too expensive. as with any city, it depends on where you are. I, unfortunately, do not live near topeka. I commute 40 miles one way everyday to work. That's 80 miles a day. Plan A was to move to Topeka asap, but things keep hindering that from happening. If I did live in Topeka, I would ride a bike everyday.
