Just been thinking lately about artist albums (given we have new Andy Hunter, new Sander van Doorn, new Armin van Buuren artist albums), and their place in the industry. My first thought is that they're a carry-over from the mainstream music industry, and aren't necessarily ideal for the dance music industry. But then I remember I'm a DJ, so I'm naturally biased towards smaller more regular releases.

And then I remember the Daft Punks, Chemical Brothers, Justice's and Digitalisms have been releasing albums for ever, so it's been integral to our industry. But does it need to be?  What do you guys think the role of artists albums are, for the electronic music industry? Do you think they're no different for us than the rest of the music industry?

As a DJ I'm much more interested in an "episodic" approach, and as a listener I just want the music. I don't really care for pre-packaging anymore.

People like Joel, Dave, what's your take? Do you plan on releasing an artist album at any point? Is it something you aspire to? Or do regular releases do the trick. What about revenue streams, is there a substantial difference between releasing 5 EPs in a year (or 5 "releases") vs a single album?

Artist albums can be good, it gives artists a chance to show more of what they can do, and generally reach a wider audience.  Its all just music to me, either you like it or you don't.  If your looking for peak hour tracks, they are usually harder to find on the albums, but I make tons of music myself, and an album might give you a place to cross genre, and release stuff that might not completely fit with your idea or label.  I think they are good personally. .02

That pretty much says it all I think.

DJs are gonna pick up the Vinyl, CD singles, and individual downloads to play out.

Average joe electronic music fan is gonna pick up the artist album.
