Ok, someone REALLY needs to explain to me WHY Serato is preferred here over Traktor. I don't get it. I don't see it as better. So... why? What does it do BETTER than Traktor and what does it do that Traktor does not?

I was waiting for this. I'm interested in the answer as well. I've just about set my heart on Traktor.

Well... I have no regrets. I think Traktor is a better package over all.

I think its more its reputation. It is seen as getting as close as possible, when plugging in decks! Tracktor scratch hasn't been out that long so we'll see what happens on that front.

Mind you Tractor scratch is now endorsed by grandmaster flash.

I would say the serato dials are very intuative for cut and scratch djs. Not seen what tracktor scratch has?

On the other hand if its midi controller and software then traktor is surely a better option. And serato is new to this? Apart from the possible appeal of the vestax and itch?

Traktor Scratch is still very young compaired to Serato.   A lot of guys had problems with FinalScratch hence why NI went to Traktor Scratch and meanwhile Serato was getting better and better in stability.  So a few years ago Serato got really cemented in as THE DVS solution because of the Final Scratch issues.  I'm sure in a few years, unless Serato does some really big things other than video, Traktor will be considered equal if not better than Serato.

I think its mainly the Rane name, people know the company and reputation, what DJs endorse it, Dj's it caters too, and the GUI itself.

First off I chose Traktor for its resemblance to Final Scratch which I played for several years.  Next, I was liking the interface, how I can multi-task with it and its USB2.0 vs 1.1.  Software wise, besides similar GUI's, layout, FX and extras did as well.

another good point, as Final Scratch was phasing out in popularity and NI was staring on Traktor Scratch, Serato took the lead.

OK... marketing issue... Traktor Scratch shouldn't be billed as 1.0. It's 3.0. It really is. The only difference between Traktor and Traktor Scratch is a hardware audio interface. That's it.

FS made a huge mistake with 2.0. That killed it. That's also where NI stepped in and made Traktor compatible with FS and eventually why they stopped supporting FS as well.

Software wise though, what does Serato do that Traktor can't? I understand the interface thing... if it's personal preference.

Is that for real? That's something I've been wondering about, because they sell an upgrade package from Traktor Scratch to Traktor 3, and claim it's sooo necessary because Traktor 3 is sooo much more excellent. (They being NI.)

Software wise, what actually comes with the Traktor Scratch package?

Traktor Scratch is like Traktor LE if I understand right. It's limited by some things. The engine and the interface though, that's the same. Here's the features of Scratch:

http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=tssoftware&L=1

I'm sure there probably isn't an internal mixer for example since you would want to do that externally. You can see that here:

I also don't see them supporting 4 decks natively unless you upgrade.

Most of the cash for TS I would guess goes into the hardware not the software.

yes, Traktor Scratch's software is a cut down version.  Most of the money is in the hardware, Audio 8 DJ interface, multi-core cables, control vinyl and control cds.

I have Traktor 3.3 upgrade, but haven't been able to get 2 decks controlled simultaneously yet, and yeah, you can do up to four as well.  Plus get choice of internal or external mixer.  Those are the two main differences between TS's software and Traktor Studio.

I suspect too that w/o the internal mixer, you can't record a set either.
