I think its more to do with the labels perspective - most labels are quite pleased for people to include their tracks, its all promotion at the end of the day.

If your music is mainly purchased by DJs, then most of your money will come from them playing it in clubs and on the radio. I'm more concerned about radio than clubs b/c radio will reach THOUSANDs where as a club will reach a few hundred. It's all about potential distribution.

Most of the producers I know, none of whom are on any major labels, have no problem with their tracks being posted in DJ mixsets -- as long as they are posted with a track listing.  It actually pisses them off when DJs post their tracks, but don't give them credit in a tracklisting.  The biggest local forum for dance music here is www.nohatersbbs.com, and if you post a set there without a track listing, the mods will ask you to post it because the general consensus of the community there is that if you don't post the tracklisting than you're doing the producers a disfavor.

I have also talked with some major label producers via forums like this one who pretty much agree with the above.  I have no idea how their labels feel on the issue, though.

Oh, and unless you're world famous, the RIAA probably isn't even looking your direction -- yet.

Kinda neither. I'm more concerned that radio outfits pay the fees than the clubs. They can reach more people than clubs. So... I don't really care about clubs.

The RIAA have been taking a bit of a legal whipping lately, if you're to believe Slashdot. Not that it'll be enough to slow them down, yet.

Well, in the UK, they make DJs take out annual licenses now. The Djs, and the clubs (I think) are both paying to play now.

No they dont. If you are playing mp3s off a computer, they reccommend you get a license, but if your playing off of vinyl or cds (with downloaded mp3s on) you dont need one. Basically, because you own a physical copy of the recordings, they're not bothered.

Clubs still have to pay for an Ents license to play music. DJs are covered by that.
