Leave it to wikipedia to leave out the exact details, but it was Nam.

Joe's arch-foe, Cobra Commander). After some soul-searching, Snake-Eyes went to study the ninja arts with Storm Shadow's family.

Snake-Eyes’s ability to quickly learn skills especially impressed Storm Shadow’s uncle, the Hard Master. Over time, Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow became sword brothers, and unintentional rivals for the attention and favor of the Hard Master, who liked pitting them against one another to test their considerable skills. Though Snake-Eyes often attempted to throw matches in order that his friend should save face in front of his family, the Hard Master was aware of Snake-Eyes' ruse, and knew him to be the true victor.

On a mission in the Middle East, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Rock 'n Roll and Grunt were sent to save George Strawhacker from COBRA. On the way, the helicopter they were in started to have trouble and was soon going to crash. It forced the Joes to bail out, but Scarlett was stuck in the burning helicopter and Snake-Eyes stayed behind to save his lover. Snake-Eyes saved Scarlett, but a window exploded right in his face, scarring him and damaging his vocal cords (carrying Scarlett out of the wreck of the crashed helicopter, his head is actually on fire). Despite his injuries and the warning from Doc that unless he gets medical help immediately he may never speak again, Snake-Eyes convinced Hawk to let him continue on with the mission. He did so "without even saying a word."

It honestly may be that comic book multi-verse issue that always ticks me off. Then again, I could just have everything screwed up in my head.

Wow, Dave. It's a mystery to me how you can even stand the Terminator franchise, let alone Star Wars. Tongue

At the very least, in the comics they used real guns and not toy guns that only shot harmless laser-flashes. Tongue Tongue

terminator's easy... time travel allows for constant rewrites.

star wars... well... as lucas says (and lies about) there's his universe, the licensing universe and then the fan's universe. Oddly, that all makes sense. I just drop off Lucas' universe b/c I can't be bothered with it... just like he says he can't be bothered with the licensing one or the fans Wink

Seriously, it's funny to me how many times I've heard him say he has no say in the games or the books and then I find an interview with game developers and authors where they said they hard to get Lucas' approval before they could even start work. Just watch the "new beginnings" video for the Force Unleashed.

Yet when a Comic Book Publisher, itself uses a plot-device* to retcon or "re-write" continuity--you're ticked off? Huh

*eg.
       DC's use of a Multiversal collapse in the groundbreaking "Crisis On Infinite Earths".
and  Marvel's use of "reality-warping abilities" in "House of M" or "a deal with the devil" in the atrocious "Spider-Man: One More Day".

Whether you find such plot-devices distasteful or not, please don't hold all Graphic Literature accountable for the actions of "The Big Two."
There are a dozen other Comic Book Publishers and countless other Comic Book Creators that don't commonly use such devices.

If you don't like "mainstream comics", you could read Image (creator-owned/independent), IDW (current licensed publisher of Transformers), Dark Horse (current licensed publisher of Star Wars), or Dynamite (licensed publisher of Terminator 2**), just to name a few.

**They publish other Terminator stories too, but they only have the license to publish there books with the title "Terminator 2." That's copyright for ya. :\

It's not even a comic book thing, it's an 80's cartoon thing.

Do you know how many different versions of Transformers there are just in the cartoons that have been made?

There's a few versions of GI Joe as well, in fact the most recent one was just on Fox Kids in the mornings last year.

I'm sure the movie will offer a new remix to the history as well  Wink

Well... we had the original with the 80's cartoon. All GI Joes prior to that were nameless action figures.

I think the most confusing thing is that when they told Snake-Eyes original origin story they never had him speak a single word, even though he could before the helicopter accident.  On his recon patrols in Vietnam he was already using a bow and arrow just because it was quieter.

Perhaps it just wasn't in the budget to hire a new voice-actor or pay an already hired one extra. :\
