My wife asked me about www.christianvinyl.com yesterday. I had seriously looked at buying the store when it went up for sale a year or more ago, but just determined the timing was off and I had too many plates spinning already.

Does anyone know its fate?  Not that I am looking to start an online store, but just was wondering why it disappeared - so much potential as a niche store if it had gone to a download format ...

The last guy to own it sunk about 5k into it and had his web developer basically disappear with the cash. At least that's what I remember. So... it's just gone. It would be a failure in today's market anyway. It's so much easier to go through beatport or some other established mp3 site. Driving traffic away from those to a new site would be murder.

i was wondering the same thing myself. that's crazy about the web developer just taking a bunch of money and running. does that sort of thing happen a lot to people?

christianvinyl.com died because christian vinyl died.

It hardly existed. Most of what was sold there was cd anyway. The idea was to move it over to some sort of mp3 retailer, but again... too late with too little market share.

Ah yes, the sordid tale of Christian dance music's relationship with vinyl surfaces yet again... Wink

The idea was to move it over to some sort of mp3 retailer, but again... too late with too little market share.

If I recall, moving it to an Mp3 retailer would have occurred just as beatport, etc. was catching on with this site and others, so I am not convinced it would have been too late.  And the web addy was totally cheesy and christian, but that is the niche that could be marketed to: the US christian masses that wouldn't know what to do with vinyl if they had it, but like the tunes.

Oh well, I guess it is a mute discussion, but I had no idea that the guy who bought it was ripped of by his web designer ... bummer.

No argument from me  Huh  ... but when you are looking at marketing / business you have to be realistic and leverage what exists ... and since I am Canadian, pointing out the "US Christian masses" is just kinda fun!!
