Is there a free program out there that allows you to zip a bunch of files into a package?

7-zip is my favorite. Plus it's free.

The thing about Windows default is that it doesn't give you any advanced compression options or alternative formats.
Of course you may not be interested in something like that at all.

I would have to go with John on this one.  7-zip is faster and is more featureful.

winrar wants you to pay. It still works w/o paying, but it gets annoying.

Since we got rid of floppies, I haven't needed any advance zipping features.

Still there good to have when a person as myself wants to open alternate compressed-containers such as JAR or XPI.
Plus I do believe it is faster. At least it seems so from my perspective. I don't whether it's technically faster or not.

yeah... when a person wants extra features... sure. When ppl want a gzip file or something, they normally ask for a program that does that. They don't as for a zip program.

Sometimes, it's best not to give someone a 21 in 1 tool, even if it's free. All they really want is a screwdriver. Why make things more complex?

7-Zip FTW! I tried to unzip a large file using Windows' built-in zipping on my Vista machine. I stopped it after 30 minutes when it was estimating that it still would take another hour to finish. 7-Zip took less than a minute to unzip the file.

Two people drift in a lifeboat. One says, "I see an island. Our best chance is to go ashore, build a shelter, and await rescue." The others says, "No, we must go farther out to sea and hope to find the shipping lanes." Unable to agree, the two fight, the lifeboat capsizes, and they drown.
