[ HEAVEN RISE ]

« on: March 09, 2008, 05:30:11 AM »

...about the sound that they/we play?
smiley25

OPINIONS? smiley25

I've been thinking about this.

I mean I call some sounds dark and sexy...but is it right?
But when I use the word
DARK I mean bassy sounds...like electro or dark D'n'B...
When I use the word
SEXY I mean stylish,driving...main floor up coo sounds...that makes you dance... Smiley

But is it sexy...? smiley25 could I use those kinda phrases, when I talk about my sound? smiley25

I think it's fine to use words like that to describe your sound. It's not hurting anyone and to non-christians they'l know what you mean.

depends on the usage and who is around. certain things i dont say when certain people are around because it would be a stumbling block. (which paul talks about).

but for instance, outside of music, i was playing army of two with a friend the other day and he threw a grenade which cause like 4 people to run from cover into our lines of fire and i yell, that was sexy. i woudlnt say that it was sin. but, if i look at a women who i am not married to and say, shes really sexy, i think your are at least pushing the limits. same principles apply to dark and dirty.

When the clothes are dirty, you separate the dark from the light.

As somebody who does DJ out.

It is extremely important to understand the lingo of promoters and fellow djs.

If they are telling you that the crowd is very sexy and full of b@#ches then you need to cater to that.

Yeah these words are really important to understand.

places I dj:

midcity: very sexy... full of women and martinis (listeners of hiphop who actually like what I spin when i play {axwell, deadmau5, lutenkirchen, i.e. driving house music})
cafe:ine: mostly guys who like it dark {more progressive}
netparties: commercial breaks for bouncy teens/college {trance, funky breaks, commercial}
da gathering: dark, hard and fast music for the virgin ears of EDM (most of the kids are listening to hiphop, country, or rock all week)

gotta know your crowd...

just depends on the usage, this is where discernment comes in.  I agree with what Alex and Doug said.

Like I spin good bit of dark drum n bass, I just make sure its clean, but I personally don't seen anything wrong with it.  Using dirty and sexy to describe music, most of the time I would think it would be sensual sounding and really don't think its something we should play.  Since it could lead people to obscene dancing.  That's why I didn't like House music when I first started out, lot of it did sound like that.

Outside of music, I wouldn't describe some girl as sexy cause it could lead to lust but has slipped before on occasion.

I agree with both Doug and Daniel on this one. Discernment plays a big role in what music you play. Me, personally, I try to make sets constantly to appeal to all audiences. It's a hard thing to do, and it takes knowing your music very well, from beginning to end. Get the feel of the crowd, and then quickly and carefully set your flow. It takes alot of experience and practice, however the more you do these things, the easier it becomes, especially if you have more music coming in.  Wink

If your describin the music you play then why not use those words, their descriptive words. But like alex talks about.. your not on about another girl if you got a wife. Keep it too the music an it's fine.

I think my wife is sexy. Does that make me evil?
But you have wife...it's okay...but I am single **hint hint  Wink **...and dj and I do play singles! smiley8

But if I call it sexy..and pull up tune like:
MASON VS. PRINCESS SUPERSTAR - Perfect (exceeder) (vocal club mix)
...I don't know could I play it... smiley22
I mean when I got wife...I SURELY AM PLAYING SEXY STUFF TO HER! Tongue
But could I play awesome sounding tunes...and still stay show my Faith?
Or if I enjoy @ home stuff like this...and not play it outside my home walls...or my headphones...does it make me just Pharisee?

Xspecially this question goes to Jonathan, because he knows me most @TF!(but all can answer)

juice, in this context, "sexy" does not refer to the lyrics, but more about the overall sound of a track. i've heard many songs from Christians that had a sexy sound to them. that does not mean the song makes me want to have sex or puts dirty thought in my head. it simply means the song had a very cool sound that could only be described as sexy.

Chris summed it up for me as well, pretty much.

Except that I like the word sexy, and probably use it more than I should. Still, I think if your intentions are right, then sexy is an industry word that people will understand. You'll know if you're taking it too far my friend.
